They leak out the top from some plugs.
They also use a hydraulic clutch set up, which if it's leaking from the concentric slave set up in the bell, will cause both issues.
You are pretty much stuck with a same trans replacement, unless you want to buy a $500 adaptor bell housing for a T5 or other trans.
These are common, and rebuild kits are not expensive. New trans or not, you have to fool with the clutch.

Nothing wrong with the Mazda box, Ford owned a good chunk of Mazda, millions served in Rangers and F150s.
Pretty sure your clutch is hydraulic, no cable. The line you see is a hydraulic line. Trace it back, you should find a master cylinder.
