I've never heard of a zf 6 but a zf s542 is a five speed with a granny low that Ford used with the 351w so you should be able to find one for a 351w. www.phoenixhardparts.com has rebuilt zf s542s for a good price.
I know Ford offers a 6-speed manual in the newer Super Duty F-250 thru F-550 trucks(M6HD).It's ratios are 5.79:1(Low),3.30:1(1st),2.10:1(2nd),1.30:1(3rd),1. 00:1(4th),0.72(5th),and reverse is 5.23:1.I don't think this later HD 6-speed will bolt up to a 351W.You'd probably have an easier time swapping in a late '80s-early '90s M5OD-HD(5.72:1 Low gear).Hope this helps.
ok, now I remember what a zf6 is. No, it will not bolt up to a 351w. I looked into it when considering a swap to a manual for my 90 bronco. Different bellhousing bolt pattern. An m50d would work but I have heard that they are relatively weak for use with a 302 especially a 351w. Thats why I'd recommend going with the zf-s542 if you want to stay with a ford transmission. If you decide that you really want a six speed there is always the nv 5600 that is used by dodge for their v-10s and diesels. There is an article in the most recent Petersen's 4-Wheel Magazine that talks about an adapter for the nv 5600 to bolt up to a 351w but and then using an np205 transfer case which they make an adapter for. But then comes the mess of new transfer case linkage, clutch assembly, driveshaft modification, etc...
Well the thing it that I want to beef an engine up to over 500lb of torque. The zf5 is only rated to 400 something if I remember correctly. I any thoughts on what to do?
Over 500lb-ft of torque...I wish I had that problem. I have heard of C-6 automatics being built to handle that much torque but I am sure it is costly and you probably don't want an auto. In terms of manuals that Ford offered, I have been told that the np 435 is a pretty stout manual trans and have been in 500-600lb -ft applications but that sure seems like a lot of power for that transmission. There is also the t-18 or t-19 which are similar to the np435 but I dont know any details about them other than they are four speeds with granny lows, and were offered in small and big block applications. What motor do you have, knowing the bellhousing pattern will making searching for a trans that much easier. There is always the zf-6 that is used with the 525lb-ft powerstroke or the nv 5600 from dodge that I mentioned before that will work with the adapters. But the zf will not work with the older pushrod motors ford built unless there is an adapter I don't know about.
If you found a 351M block, that would maybe bolt up to a ZF-6. The ZF transmissions where made in the big block platform, but I think the earlier ones ZF42 where also made in small block pattern. But they would be more scarce. You might try to find an adapter plate at advance adapters at their .com address. The early ZF42 5 speeds where rated at 420 ft lbs while the later zf47 where rated at 470 ft lbs. You might also check out any adapters made for small block ford and the NV4500 and NV5600 transmissions.
