honing out bearings

Can anyone tell me how to hone out pinion bearings. I tried a small brake hone in a electric drill but than did not work. I am trying to make a set of bearings that will slip on and off the pinion while I set up the rear end. This way I do not have to mess with pressing on or off the bearings untill I know the correct shim size to use.

you need to use a pinon depth guage prior
I understand what your trying to do but the tolerances need to be done with the new bearings pressed on the pinon.
the bearings are a hardened steel and are not very easily machined.
My suggestion is to buy extra bearings in case they are damaged while pressing them off and on when changings shims to get proper clearances
there are no short cuts when doing rear diffs

There are no shortcuts when doing diff work, but I know what you are after. Where I am, there is a reputable machinist who puts my bearings on a sunnen hone and precision hones the ID's so I can do what you are trying to do. An option is to emery the b'jeepers out of the new pinion to get the bearings to slide. I don't like the sounds of this for a street rear, but have done it many times for drag gears with no failures yet, knock wood. I personally don't see a problem with a little "slip fit" on the pinion bearings, once things are drawn up and crushed, they aren't going anywhere. My experience.

I took mine to a shop and they honed em out for a few bucks. I used them to set up my front and rear on my Ranger and had no probs. Once you do get it set and press on the permanent bearing you do have to recheck to make sure everything is still setup right. The gears I have set up this way I have been lucky enough that the setup has remained the same and have not had to re-pull the permanent bearings. Good Luck!
