I sure hope someone can help me out. I have a 1992 Ford F-250, 7.3 diesel, 5spd., 4x4 pickup. For about the last week to 10 days the transmission (from time to time) is near impossible to get into 1st or 2nd gear with the engine running. It seems that the clutch pedal is sitting about 2 inches higher than the brake pedal and has about 2 inches of "free play". Sometimes it runs fine, other times, if you let off of the break, the truck moves while the clutch is pushed to the floor. Can this problem be adjusted? Air in the system? Need a new/rebuilt slave or master cylinder? How do you check to see which one is bad? I am at a loss, but would appreciate any help someone can give. Thanks in advance,

Your clutch was not meant to be adjustable. You mentioned that it does not act this way all of the time. That would make me think hydraulics or firewall flex, but I won't rule out clutch either on these diesels with the dual mass flywheel. Make sure the resevoirs are adequately filled. To be sure it is not the clutch of flywheel you can do 2 simple things. First take a drive and get to 3rd or 4th and let the motor chug then nail the excellerator. Keeping an eye on the tach see if the rpms go up considerably without the truck responding. If this occurs the clutch is bad. Second remove the inspection cover on the bell housing and rotate the dmfw. These 2 piece flywheels have a small amount of free play. The amount of free play should be between 5/8" and 3/4", anything above or below will indicate a bad flywheel.
