Hi Guys
I have 02 4.6L auto, 2wd F150 about 6 months ago bend a valve and cracked a head had them replaced. now when i start the truck i get white smoke from the tail pipe and a anti freeze smell. thinking about getting rid of this dog and dropping in a 5.2L. what does it intail
Love the truck just what to stop have problems with this motor.
I can tell you now that if they interchange without modifying the mounts it will still be a pain. You should be able to raise the 5.4 high enough to pull it forward away from the tranny, but not so quick. You have to unbolt the mounts from the block because the engine won't clear the mounts on the frame as the book says it does. The top of the bell housing on the tranny is set hard up against the fire wall and the motor mounts are still down into the frame by an inch or so. The 4.8 may be smaller in height in which case it should be easy to lift and pull out. I suppose you could get underneath and pull the drive shaft and trasnmission from there, then lift the engine out. But it is just not supposed to happen that way.
I think you may be jumping the gun a little. Smoke on startup sounds like antifreeze. With a recent head fix, I'm guessing the head gasket isn't sealing right. So you should be able to take it back to where the head was done and have them fix it no charge.
Engine swap would be a lot of work. Can be done though. Just not plug and play. Wiring harness. Computer swap or re-program. Exhaust system changes. Motor mounts.
Thank you for the info
if it's not a swap out v8 for a v8 then i'm taking it back, getting them to fix the head gasket then i'm giving the truck to my wife and getting me 05 or 06 with the 5.4L in it.
