i have to get an oil change. what weight do you guys recommend. i had mobile put in last time.. forgot what weight it was.. i see some guys vary from 5w-10-20-30. 99 4x4 with 67k on rebuilt 87k total.. tx
5w30 or 5w20 is fine. For Minnesota with the cold temps, the thinner the better. There is not that much difference in the two. I personally use 5W30 Mobil dyno oil. Truck will run forever. I change at 5000 mile intervals. The problem arrises with guys thata want to use 15w40 or 20w50. Thats too thick.
The '99 I just bought calls for 5W30 under the hood. Can I use 5W20?

head to Walmart, pick up two 5 qt jugs of Motorcraft 5W-20 synthetic blend and a Motorcraft FL820-S oil filter. happy driving....5,000 mile oil change intervals (OCI) unless you are doing "severe duty" as defined by the owner's manual.

Thanks for the info, didn't know that Ford recomended replacing the 5W30 w/ 5W30. I run Valvoline or Mobile dyno 5W30 in my '94 Ranger. I agree that those other oils are way too thick...unless your main bearings are toast.
Our vehicles at work thats all we run is 10W30 Mobil synthetic. They qualify for extreme duty.
One of our 2002 vehicles blew an engine at 85,000. The driver was not paying attention and hit an blown tire in the road. It took out the oil pan.
When they took the engine out and performed an autopsy on it, the mechanic said the engine showed very little wear and said he was now a believer in synthetic oil. He said it showed half the wear he had seen in his 25 years as a mechanic and convential oil engine.
I am not a mechanic but have been around a little enough to know that engine was very clean on the inside and had almost no oil deposits in it. We change the oil at 5,000 miles and have been running synthetics since 2002.
Seeing is believing so I have switched to synthetic in all my vehicles.
I run 5W20 Motorcraft Semi-Synthetic from Walmart in my F150 and Lincoln LS. nothing but. and can't beat the price. I ran Lucas Full Synthetic 10w30 in the Lincoln once but had a hard time justifying the $7.99 a qt. for a car that takes 6.5qts!
Mobil 1 is under a lot of criticism right now because they are just squeaking by the wear test. I used it for 65K miles and have since switched to motorcraft semi synthetic. Cheaper and that is what ford recommends. 5w30 or 5w20 will work. I use 5w30 because that is what the truck has had since I have had it.
