302 Camshaft
302 Camshaft
I am a new one to this site and I have a 1992 F 150 that I am rebuilding the engine. It is a 302 and the previous owner was not real keen on changing the oil and had a lot of sludge build up in the engine. It has taken its toll on some of the internals and it needs a cam and lifters and I was wondering what the cam specs are on the truck motor vs a 5.0 HO out of a mustang. I can get a good cam and lifters for a real fair price. I don't put a lot of miles so I dont want to invest in a new cam and lifters if I dont have to. I am kind of strapped.
The HO cam is a healthy upgrade. 0.379 lift versus 0.444", and 244 vs 266 duration. If your motor has a roller cam right now you'll have the right lifters and spider assembly already but if not you'll need these parts too.
I put a roller cam out of a 91 stang in a 95 F150 and it give it a little boast in power it felt like any way. That was the only change in the rebuild i would definetly do it. Another cheap thing you can do is grind the exhaust bump out of the heads. That to will give you an added boast in power and it's free! E7's need all the help they can get on the exaust side. I don't know about a truck cam but i think the stang cam has a .444 lift and a 117 lobe seperation. I can't remember the duration. I'm not sure on this you will have to check me but i think you can run rockers out of a 460 for added lift.
OMG!!!! stock 5.0 trucks only had .379 lift my god no wonder everyone thinks they are underpowered!!!
don't know about 460 rockers but you can run mustang cobra rockers they were 1.7:1 ratio? verses 1.5:1 ratio? of stock truck rockers

BTW... stock rocker ratio on all SBFs is 1.6:1.

That should be an F4TE roller cam, you'll have to measure the lobe lift to be certain. This would have been easier before it was removed but all that's needed to do it on a bench is a set of V blocks and a dial indicator. Prop the cam up on the end bearings in the V blocks(make sure everything is super clean and oiled so the bearings aren't scratched) and setup the dial indicator on the base circle of a cam lobe. Then rotate the cam and record max lift, you should get about 0.260" lift on the intake and 0.280" lift on the exhaust. If you get 0.280" lift on both lobes then it's a HO cam.
if you want more RPM with a stock mustang roller you can retard the cam 4* or put it at 109 to 110 intake centerline. it will make peak power at 5300 to 5500 with a clear intake path on a truck or gt40 type intake.
