Can I just replace lifters?

I am putting on new head gaskets and re sealing the top side of on my 360. The upper portion of my engine has A LOT of sludge. My engine ran very smooth no lifter noises. However it has 130K on the motor. Can I replace the lifters with new ones without changing the cam?

Yes, you can do new lifters and same cam, but not new cam and old lifters. Look closely at the cam once the lifters are out. That might tell you if you want to use the same cam.

If you start to do the change but for some reason decide not to, be absolutely sure you put the old lifters back in the same bore they came out of.
Also, be sure to use a break in lube on the new lifters and use an oil that has adequate amount of ZDDP in it, or use an additive that does.
