Problems with getting truck to start

2004 F350 Dually
Diesel Powerstroke
15-40 motor oil
ford motor craft coolant
oil & filter change in april 09
168,000 miles

air in the fuel

bad Fuel Injection Control Module (FICM)
high pressure oil rail o-ring failure
high pressure oil stand pipe o-ring failure or the pipe itself
the high pressure oil pump (HPOP) stc fitting (if so equipped)
the high pressure oil branch tube
a stuck or bad injection pressure regulator (ipr)
a weak HPOP pump, or
the injection pressure control (ipc) sensor
a bad PCM (computer)
wire chaffing on key components.
I am sure there are more potential causes.
Regarding the fuel flow potential - do you use Motorcraft fuel filters and are you sure you do not have some air in the system? Is the upper fuel filter bowl filling up properly when cranking?
FYI - in the high pressure oil system you must develop enough oil pressure (500 psig), AND the ICP needs to detect it, or it will not start.
Your issue seems to be that it starts sometimes and not others.
Sometimes a high pressure oil leak will cause a no-start when HOT. Then it will start cold. This does not sound like your problem.
Can you take it somewhere to get the codes read (or borrow a code reader)?
We really need more info to help (IMHO).
