That Hurt!

I was coming back from lunch and hit a major, and I mean major pot hole with the passenger side front tire. Now my perfect steering truck sucks! It almost steers like the tires are towed out and the wheel doesn't rebound now. I dropped it off at the shop and he told me my dual stabilizer has to go, it's rubbing on the main steer shaft. Now, here's the problem. Until the pot hole this shaft was a good 3/4" away from the stabilizer bracket, now it's rubbing right on it. I am guessing that's why I lost my rebound but doesn't explain why the thing is jetting from lane to lane. It's not bad on the city streets but you can't drive it on the freeway, it scared the living heck out of me. Why would that shaft now be up against the bracket? I don't have a choice to go to this mechanic, he's our work guy and the boss says take it there. I would love to take it somewhere else.

well i have some advice for you... call the city. My friend hit a huge pothole in his mustang, just in town going 30 near a construction site where they were fixing the road. the city bought him 4 new rims (they were momo's, so no replacing just one).

personally, i would be taking it to a tire shop i know, very reputable, awesome front-end work. ask around, maybe you know of one like that, that specializes in suspension, not engines. Besides, the city may be paying the bill. Ask them first.

I bought mine wrecked, the front left tire had hit something hard, like a tree and shoved it sideways. The bracket the steering damper mounts to was bent and I had to get it hot to bend it back, probably something similar bent on yours causing the steering damper to rub.

yup. i hear ya. but doesn't hurt to ask them. like i work for the City of Springfield, and if the sewer has a problem, it's best to call the city, some people just call roto-rooter first, but if it's during the day, the city may be able to do some things for free, or may even pay for roto-rooter bill. Probabaly depends where ya live.

oh, i just realized something. i imaginethey could say you could have swerved, because with my friend, it was raining, so the pothole was filled, couldn't tell it was there.

good luck !

I had the truck torn down today. Both outer tie rods on the passenger side where cracked. The lower center adjusting sleeve was bent up into my stabilizer bracket. I also had two out of four ball joints that were bad so all 4 are getting replaced along with all the other steering components. I figured while it's torn down I'm having ujoints, brakes, rotors, unitized hubs and auto locking hubs replaced too. Now maybe the ESOF will work. ha ha

You can file damage claims with the State of NC... I think they take the position that it's cheaper to pay damage claims than to repair the roads!

Ouch. Went and picked up the parts to drop off at the shop and WOW. The boss said order the parts from the dealer so I did. Imagine how much money he'd save by buying like Moog. The two outer right tie rods, left tie rod, long adjusting sleeve and the drag link for $386. I don't think I want to see the bill from the hubs, lockers, rotors and pads. Then comes labor. Woo Hoo

I'm still waiting on getting it back. An hour ago he was searching for new rattle clips for the front pads. My new Abex ones didn't come with any.

Heck, you've already done you part for the country by buying Ford. It's them that have a foreign car in the driveway that are hurting us... sorry for the rant and hijacking. At least now you'll have a whole new front end!

Well, got her back and my new, well almost new, dual stabilizer from Rancho is useless now and has been removed. Not happy at all about it but oh well. Ford updated the outer tie rod ends and where the ubolts go around to fasten the bracket to the rod end, it's square now instead of the original round.

Ouch- that does hurt! I'd definitely put a claim in with the city- it can't hurt! Take pictures of the hole for evidence.
