Hello, I am new to this forum and just stumbles on it by accident. I have read your comments about the ICP problems with no starts. I sounds like you know alot about these trucks. I have 2003 6.0L automatic 4x4 crewcab 4" lift and 35's. I can admit that I don't know everything about this truck, but I do regularly change the oil and fuel fliters. I bought it with Airaid intake, 4" flow master exhaust, and triple dog programmer. I bought the truck with 85 k on it and it now has 125 k. It has had the same problem since I bought it. At least 3 times per week it has trouble starting and cranks over well with 2 new batteries, but sounds like a gas engine trying to start that is out of time. When it starts every time it takes 5-6 miles for it to run correctly. I will barely break 1200 rpm or even pull itself and blows white smoke. It does not matter if you let it warmup for 3 min or 15 min it does the same thing making the whole truck shutter when you drive it, but once your drive it for about 10-15 min it runs perfect. I have beeen to 8 different Ford dealerships with 8 different answers from turbo to EGR valve and injector timing issues, but they all gave me the same price tag. The first dealership put 2 different turbo's on it. I am desperate this is my daily driver and only means of transportation. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. If you need additional info please just let me know.
Firts thing is to make sure your electrical system is peforming well (batteries w/ a load test and alternator test). You may have already done this. This is important because low voltages can cause funny things - even ruin an expensive Fuel Injection Control Module (FICM).
You have changed fuel filters - great! Are you using the OEM (Motorcraft, International, or Racor) filters? It is important to do so. Aftermarket filters can cause a variety of problems. Have you ever run out of fuel or badly plugged the fuel filters? If so, your injectors can be damaged QUICKLY at pressures less than 45 psig. Do you have a way of checking the fuel delivery pressure? This helps in troubleshooting.
Also, your injectors are actuated by engine oil: a high pressure oil pump, HPOP, uses oil as a hydraulic fluid. Your injectors work the best w/ 5W40 synthetic oil (IMO) and with the most recent computer flash update from Ford.
Lastly (with the past work, turbos and EGR valves) it sounds like it COULD be injectors. There are some tests you could perform. It couls also be a leaking EGR cooler. You would have to pull your EGR valve to check this.
How much troubleshooting do you want to do yourself?
I always highly recommend folks to get a scan tool / code reader if they are going to be effective at troubleshooting the complicated 6.0L engines. You can do many things without it, but sometimes it is a guessing game and that CAN get expensive.;
Pay attention to kep4's post. Have the dealer test the glow plug circuit, however, with it being intermittent things will be tough. No codes when it happens?
yuo,03 took sheild off and tryed to get my arm up but not enough room between fire wall and bell housing.Am also having hard time finding a new sensor as international up here(canada) dont have any in any off there locations,they are almost have the price of ford but i will have to go to ford to get one
LOOKING AT THE REAR OF MOTOR FROM INSIDE OF CAB THERE IS A RECTANGULAR BOX WITH 2 SETS OF WIRES COMING OUT.IS THIS WHERE I DISCONNECT ICP CAN NOT SEE A SENSOR.
i have 6.0 2004 icp is .23 of a volt when cranking,conrtol psi is about 150 to0160 i have replace icp sensor and ficm still no start,had 4 inj. replace 6 month ago. do i have a inj. or pump trouble
Your truck will not start unless the PCM sees 500 psig (0.82 to 0.84 volts range) minimum in the HPO. If you are confident the ICP sensor and wiring is good, then it sounds like you have a HPO leak, an IPR issue, or an HPOP issue.
Do you have a way of monitoring IPR duty cycle? You need to apply shop air to the ICP opening to listen for a HPO system leak.
i dont mean to thread jack back where is the icp on an 06 6.0??? because im having the same issues and everyone is telling me hpop and i would rather try to unplug my icp before i change my hpop...
My 03 Ex. 6.0 popped a code and stalled. Came up as the ICP sensor. I had never before wrenched on this vehicle except for general maint. I got on this site and followed the thread. I replaced the sensor from the top using the 2 7/8" socket from Auto Zone. I took my time and just under 3 hours later she was purring again. Thanks a bunch for the help..
