I have a 2001 f-250 with a 5.4. IT has 115K on it. I heard a weard humming noise under the hood. It sounds like a very noisy fuel pump. I just purchased the truck and it has always made this noise since I had it. I got curious one day and started feeling around. The pcv valve vibrates like crazy. If you pull it out of the engine it still vibrates. IF you put your finger over the end of it the vibrating pretty much quits. The truck runs fine but you can hear the vibrating pcv from inside the cab. Is this normal?
Ok how bout this.......anybody got noisy lifters on start up after setting overnight? I thought it was because I used 10W30 instead of 5W20 so I put 5W20 synthetic blend in it and it still does it. I don't know if it is the lifters but it sounds more like lifters than lower end(bearings) more of a light rattle than a deep clatter.
Plastic pcv valve? I just bought one from carquest all metal. Why would this matter?
what you are hearing is the metalic sound of the metal plunger on the inside vibrating. When it is new there is no oil residue to quiten it. Get the plastic one from the dealer and you won't here it.

I would buy this except i've seen lots of the triton pcv valves that are original and plastic hum because they are just bad. I don't think it really matters if it's metal or plastic, if it's not operating right the vacuum draw through it will cause it to vibrate, usually due to deposit build up.

Maybe so, but when I bought my truck 7 years ago, I changed the factory pcv valve just as a preventative thing along with the rest of the stuff I felt needed changing. The pcv valve made no noise until I replaced it with a metal one from Advance Auto. It drove me crazy until I put the original plastic one back in. No more noise.
