Question Sugar Maple tree question.

I'm thinking of transplanting a Sugar Maple tree to my yard but I've heard they have shallow root systems that can cause problems with the grass. Does anyone here have a Sugar Maple in their yard?

We have 3 about 20 yrs old. 2 dont' have exposed roots, 1 spreads out like an octopus on the surface & is trying to go under a foundation wall. They also attract all manner of insects when they weep. Very pretty though.

Yea, a couple thousand, about 25 in the yard. Where I have not enclosed them in a planter bed, it is very difficult to grow grass beneath them. They of course draw up moisture, but the shade also hurts grass growth.

they have an invasive root system and get into everything, my garden beds are chock full of the roots every year also watch out for leach fields i even had one send roots into a bad of peat moss once.

"The root system of sugar maple in good soils is deep and branching. Natural root grafts are common. The seasonal periodicity of root growth is independent of aerial growth and often continues into the winter months if the soil remains unfrozen. Over half of the root growth for any given year, however, occurs during the same period as height and radial growth."

I'd love to brag and claim I knew it off the top of my head, but alas, it is not so.
Fortunate enough to be married to a Lansdcape Architect. She had the info about the Norway and Red Maples in her head, but wasn't sure about the Sugar.
She looked it up in her reference material this morning and emailed it to me from work.

Maples have a tap root system that goes down deep, unlike a willow that is shallow and runs along just below the surface.
