Tire Pressures

I was wondering if you guys are running the recommended tire pressures when you're towing or if you're running something different. I'm towing a 10k toy hauler with about a 1k tongue weight. The 1996 Suburban I was towing with was running 80psi in the rear tires, but the X only says 55psi? Should I be upping the pressure in the rear when towing?

i run 10psi more then the recommended side wall (loaded or unloaded). i'm guessing you don't have E rated tires with a 55psi rating, mine say 80psi cold on them.

Don't run more than the max noted amount. Do you have D rated tires?

look at the weight rating on your tires...I have E rated tires and I pull about the same weight as you..towing I inflate to 70frt / 80rear, unloaded around 50frt / 60rear psi..

you don't want to be underinflated when towing..it heats the tires up and can lead to failure..

You should be running E rated tires if you are towing 10k lbs, that way you can run 80 lbs in the rear which is where the E rated tire is at it's strongest value!

I do have E rated tires and that's why I questioned it. The tires say 80psi on the sidewall for the maximum load. I thought the rear end felt a little soft and wallowy, and that's why I asked. Did the X's come with D rated tires as OEM fitment?

Yes they came with D's. I would run the max; 80lbs with that trailer.

I think the older ones came with D's and the newer one's came with E's (as my 05 did) I'm not sure what year they changed over or if it had to do with the HD towing option.

After the recall was when Ford switched to E rated tires. Which should be 2000 or possibly even 2001.

I still have my recalled tires on it. They were changed every winter to studs.

Do you not use your Excursion often? I went through an entire set (including the spare) with those D rated Firestones. All of them at some point blew out. The E rated Firestones that replaced the recalled ones though were great tires. I got about 65,000 miles out of those with zero flats or blow outs. When I got the recalled tires replaced with the E rated Firestones I got five tires and I still have that fifth tire as my spare which has never been used. Right now I have Pirelli STRs on the Excursion.

I guess I'm wrong. These are Firestone Steeltex R4S E rated.
