I am getting my first Super Duty that has the ITBC. I have heard many good reports on it. What do most guys end up with it set at? Just looking for a starting point to adjust from.
Hook it up and tow with it on a large parking lot or empty road. Just keep adjusting until the trrailer tires skid and back off to next lower number. I have to tow with mine at max for my heavy 5th wheel. Use the hand applied trailer brake for this, not the trucks service brakes. You will prob be driving only 10-15 MPH.
Good advice in the previous post. I believe the manual says to increase until the trailer wheels lock and back it off a notch. It really depends on the trailer. My bobcat trailer empty only required the brake controller at 2, loaded she's gotta be at 10. My cargo trailer fluctuates between 5.5 and 8 depending on what's in it...
setting is based on load. Best way to adjust:
1. Straight line distance, getting both truck and trailer up to 25 mph. Recommend an intial setting of about 5. Attempt to stop using the TBC only. (note ensure you have enough space that you can use the truck brakes if needed). Your goal is a fairly quick stop without skidding the trailer brakes.
2. Notice how you stop is it uniform or does the trailer want to pull you to one side. This may indicate you need to do an adjustment to the trailer brakes.
3. Do this increasing or decreasing the setting as required till the trailer brakes stop at a rate that you are satified with.
4. Road test both together and make any minor adjustments as necessary.
If you travel in the north with snow and ice, you will love the TBC. I always turn mine higher in the winter on snow and ice. Not good to see the trailer coming around and trying to pass!!!
pulling a 10K travel trailer I usually have it set at 7-8 ...and depending on road conditions even lower.
Since the computer will pulse the output voltage once the ABS kicks in on the pickup, I always set mine to the first notch where the trailer wheels lock up.
