it should work. inserting the tool releases small "fingers" that hold the line from pulling off the filter. Whats probably happened is one of these "fingers" has gotten bent, and does not move far enough out of the way any more with the tool inserted. Same thing happened on my new 95. I had to insert the tool so it spread as many "fingers" as possible, then bash the filter off w/ a hammer. After i got the filter off, i was able to bend the bad "finger" back to how it was supposed to be, and now it works fine.

DISCLAIMER: This worked for me, but i am a professional mechanic, and have years of experience fixing things like this. If you think you are in over your head, take it to a shop. You mess that end up beyond repair, means you will have to buy a whole new line.

It took me forever to change mine because I could not get one off and I was afraid to break something(tried 3 times). In dismantling another truck, I discovered what the connections look like on the inside and realized it was not what I thought. I went to my truck and pulled off the "tough" one with a good tug(using the tool of course). Blue rebels description is the closest one yet.
Personally though...I don't see how you can mess them up.
I would give it a good spray of lube and then insert tool and give it a tug. I wish I had a pic on my comp...you would see what I mean.
I'm sure they can be damaged...but I think you would really have to be brutal and I'm pretty sure that the connection should come apart with any of the removal tools you can buy.
If you did get one off....get a light and look inside the end of the line fitting.

If you pull hard on it with it not released then you will mess the fingers up.
But it will not hurt the fuel line as you can get replacements at auto parts stores and put the them in the fuel lines.

A keeper with mess up fingers:

Use this type tool to release them, other types might not work as well as they were made for the garter spring type keepers.

Thanks for the pics subford.....I had no idea that they were replaceable.
I thought the "fingers" were one with the end. The set of disconnect tools you show is the set I have....seems to work good.
Looking at the pics..I see you've seen a few damaged ones in your day.
I'm not trying to argue...but if the tool was properly inserted all the way..It should depress all the fingers and the line should release. I just don't see how the fingers get messed up...unless the thickness of the tool is insufficient, therefore not depressing the fingers enough to clear the rib.
You also mention a different style of keeper....is that for a different maker or does Ford make more than one style?

ford uses/makes more then one style of connectors.

the messed up ones are probably from people forcing them apart.

Yes you are right but a lot of auto part stores still sell the older shorter ones for the garter spring type A/C and fuel lines.

Yes on the 1995 and older Ford tucks still use them on connections of the fuel lines to the fuel rail and on all of the A/C lines.

Got It Off -

Well I Ended Up Clipping The Old Filter Off With Bolt Cutters ,Leaving Just The Stem,Then I Pried At The Finger/Lock Collar Until I Loosened It And Was Able To Over Lap The Ends And Slide The Collar And The Stem Out Together - There We're 4 Bent Fingers , I Never Had A Chance With The Tool .

Thank Again All.

I just looked inside the cone on the rearward side of the filter out of my 96 f250. Been struggling for hours with it and finally cut it off (slowly) with a hacksaw. Inside I see one finger bent up against the backside of the filter nipple.
Looks like its was to go over the hump from the filter nipple and thats what was holding me up.

Parts store guys only have plastic replacements so tomorrow I'm going to the Ford dealer.

Can some anyone tell me the best way to get the filter nipple out with one finger from the retainer clip out of place?

I forced mine.

Advance didn't have a replacement, and it was too late for NAPA or the Ford garage to be open, so I got some small hose clamps, cut the tightener off, and coiled them up, put them inside the aluminum cone at the end of the line, spread them with a needle nose, and slipped the filter in.

I'll never get it apart again, but it's worked.

Try a real small screwdriver to bend the bent finger out of your way.
