On my Y-block there has been a filter before the pump for ever. I changed to a glass filter because I need to pull clean and seal tank. I keep extra elements in glovebox. Not sure if it's good for pump but dad put one inline before pump back in 1970's. Don't know if that helps. I'm sure someone will be along to say don't do it. It just always seems when I do something, it's wrong and people love to tell me about it. You can ask my wife she'll tell you. LOL.
A speck of trash under a pump valve could leave the pump inoperative or working very inefficiently. I've always wanted the filter close to the source of any contaminants.
Someone asked a question similar to this a few months back. I basically said use the filter on the pump (if there is one still) and put an inline from the pump to the carb. Use rubber fuel line to help lessen the chance of vapor-lock. I use a clear (see through) so I can see if there's any trash in the fuel. I got sorta over my post but like was said above IMHO you can't get your fuel too clean. As far as the wear on the pump I know guys that have run with filters after the fuel pump for 30-40 years. Many of the auto manufactures back in the 70s had filters that screwed in right at the carburetor! Some even had dual filters, before and after the pump from the factory.
Truth be told I had three with the old tank . One right after the tank second is the sediment bowl at the pump third is a small see through unit between the pump and the carb . After I get the new gas tank I will eliminate the first one I think .
My electronic fuel pump claims that it voids the warranty if there is no filter before.... so a filter before is absolutely mandatory by some standards. (I have a filter before and after - no issues with pressure)
