I have a 89 f-450. I started it the other day and the key and lock stuck in the start position. Needless to say when I pulled it back to run, the starter kept turning over. I jumped out, disconnected the negative terminal to stop it. I disconnected the starter power wire on the solenoid. Then I would just hold the starter wire to the solenoid to start the truck.
I have since replaced the Keys, Lock and Cylinder, and also the igition switch. However the truck still not right. with the key off and out, the truck still tries to start when i try to put it all back together.
So where to go from here? Is there something between the key lock and ignition switch that my be bad? Is it possible the solenoid went bad and thats the problem? Just at a loss for where to start. Any help is appreciated.
Alright, well now i have no power at all. Key does nothing. Even manually clicking the ignition switch does nothing. All fuses under dash are good. Any ideas?
It sounds like the original problem was a broken ign switch actuator in the steering column. This connects the key switch to the ign/start switch by a rod running down the column.
Disconnecting the power wire to the starter I would think means that the fender mounted starter relay was held "ON" at all times. It is possible that the relay or ign/start switch or both could now be bad. Also I think one of the wires on the battery side of the starter relay is a fusable link (but not an expert) so I would check that out, may be the cause of no power.
Don't be too hard on yourself. I changed the brake calipers on my 02 ranger a year ago. Couldn't get them to bleed out and take the sponge out of the pedal. Slowly went over to the local mechanic's and I had the calipers on the wrong side. Doh! I told him he could go ahead and have a good laugh at my expense. He said, "I would if I and every guy in here hadn't done the same thing.
The being perfect job has already been taken. The rest of us are going to goof now and then.
