In my haste and bad memory I left out the spacer that goes between the I6 300 engine and bellhousing. I have the whole thing back in the truck with a T18 bolted up behind it.
I am now contemplating pulling it all out and apart to put the spacer in and wondering if the spacer is really necessary.
I bought a truck with a missing c4 spacer. Not sure about your setup, but the flywheel was exposed and subject to all the dirt, rocks, and water from driving. I now have everything buttoned up and safe from debris.

The spacer the OP is refering to is not a flywheel or flexplate inspection cover aka dust cover.
It's a flat plate that fits between the engine and trans.
It has to be there.
The plate used with a manual trans is not the same for an automatic.
Patagonia, AZ. What a beautiful place! your gonna need to install the plate,
not only does it affect the starter but also the pilot bearing as the input shaft sets too deep.
