Dtc 1316?

My Dads 02 7.3 started running real rough, and the engine light came on. He had a superchips tuner in it so I checked the codes and 1316 came up and wont clear. I know 1316 is "injector circuit/IDM codes detected" but have no idea what causes this. Just for the heck of it, I tried the stupid stuff, changed air cleaner, fuel filter, and uninstalled the tuner. No luck.

I am hoping a diesel guru might read this and be able to help.

Thanks in advance for any help!

By the way I tried the search function but got nothing.

Id look under the valve covers and check the main wire connection to the injectors. They tend to come loose.

I agree with Glenn... check under the valve cover for your 9 pin plastic piece of junk connector/s.. They separate because the locking tabs warp .. see my gallery pic's for a loose connector.. You can re connect it and use a shim behind the lock tabs.
The valve cover gaskets are re usable so you can fix it for 50 cents.. (use two quarters for the shims, grinding one side for clearance for the valve cover.. ) Ford will charge you big bucks to fix this..
Re torque your rockers and injectors while you have the covers off..

Don't know the exact date, but it was in this time frame when Ford change the connector type..
He can ohm check the connector on "top" of the cover first to determine if this is the problem..

ACCEPTEDCheck Mark

code description of P1294 as a high to low open on the driver's side of the engine. Gain access to the Injector Driver Module connector. Remove and check resistance of the injectors through the connector. Pin 23 (PK/YE) is common to all 4 cyls. Check it to pins 22 (WH) for cyls. 2 and 7, (BN/LB) for cyl. 4, 19 (LG/OR) for cyl 6 and 9 (LB) for cyl. 8 for open circuits.

Injector and circuit resistance is 2.5-4.5 ohms

If more, look for a bad injector. The engine cylinder numbering is not the usual Ford system. It is 1,3,5,7 front to rear on the passenger side, and 2,4,6,8 front to rear on the driver side.

If less, check the wiring harness for broken wires or unplugged/loose connectors. One under the valve covers have a tendency to come loose.

If all is good, you have a bad IDM. (Injector Driver Module)

There is a common problem with the connector inside the valve cover that plugs into the valve cover gasket. It works loose and the connection can become intermittent. Ford has a "locking clip" available to secure this connector better. Part#2C3Z-14A163-AB. The valve cover must be removed to install the clip.

There is also common problems with the IDM failing. Injectors are common to fail as well.

P1316 Injector Circuit/IDM Codes Detected. This code sets if an IDM problem has been detected. This code is set because of the previous code.

All are expensive parts so testing will be in your best interest before replacing any parts.

Let me know if you have further questions.

The 3 02's I've been under the valve covers on did not have the updated harness unless it had been changed out by a mechanic. Don't know if yours is safe or not Glenn
