70 Frame

I have a 72 Sports Custom short bed. My question is a friend of mine has given me a 70 swb frame that has already been converted from drum to disc in front and drums in back. Can i place my 72 onto the 70? Unforturnately my friend has passed and it was given to me. If it will work how do i tell what year the discs are from? Also what power booster and master cyclinder do i get? He just did the discs and never got to get back to it before he passed. I would really like to use it just for all the hard work he has already did.

Is yours an F150? I believe the frames are the same from 68-72. Check if there are any cast #'s on the disc and drums for reference. I know that on my back drums I saw a Ford cast # after I wire brushed it and painted them. I just replaced my original front disc due to them getting to thin. I will check them out tomorrow to see if I see any cast #s. Hope this helps.

I don't see any reason why not, but it'd be a neat trick to find an f150 that old..........

Frame should be identical, but that's got to be the hardest way I have heard to get front disks. Pull the I-beams off it and throw them under your truck.

I agree that the chassis are identical, Bill is able to help you identify your part numbers.

Don't know kind of work place that you have, but painting your new chassis and lifting the cab/front clip and then the bed is not any harder if you have a place to do it. IMHO

Out on the driveway is not a place.

Disc brakes were not factory installed on F100 2WD's until 1973 (1976 on F100/150 4WD's), so my guess is, the discs are from a 1973/79 F100 2WD or a 1975/79 F150 2WD.

This is a very popular conversion, and IMO a very good idea, as the front drum brakes used on F100's were inadequate when these trucks were new and are not designed or suitable for today's traffic.

The rotors and calipers are the same: 1973/79 F100 2WD // 1975/79 F150 2WD. The calipers were also used on some 1980/89 F100/150 2WD's.

As far as the frame swap is concerned, 1970/72 use the same bodies and frames.

btw: No F150's until model year 1975.

Frames

They are both F100 frames. I have a 72 with 4 drums and i have gotten a 70 F100 frame that has been had the front converted to disc but i don't know where or what they came off. My 72 is just a body sitting on top of a frame. It only had a cab and bed. Neither one has a motor or steering column. I've only got a 2 car garage and already had county to tell me it has to be inside or get fined.

Walt if you can get the help to lift the body I'd suggest swapping them over to the 70 frame. It would save cleanup of your 72 frame. Once the body is swapped sell or scrap the 72 frame. It would get your truck together a little faster and get the county off of your tail.

Do the work in your driveway on long holiday weekends on a marathon schedule, LOL. I have the same problem in a very restrictive town. The city officials are off on these days. Only problem with this way of working, you have to develop a very detailed game plan before you start so you can make the deadline (put it back into your garage).

Most times town officials don't get jacked up when you are working on a project, it's when it sits for weeks at a time untouched that it they get complaints about.

That all depends on which town...and which state one lives in.

Here in LA LA Land, the police can tow someone's "project" away, without giving prior notice. The vehicle doesn't necessarily have to be parked where it is exposed to the street, either. If a neighbor complains, the vehicle can be towed from behind the house, or out in the "back forty" ...or whatever.

The owner is not only stuck with the horrendous towing charge (usually $200.00!), but the charges to store the vehicle at the "official" police storage lot...until it's recovered by the owner.

These charges can be 50 DOLLARS a day!

Here in LA LA Land...if the license plates have expired, and the vehicle is parked on the street or on ones property, the police can tow the vehicle away.

Condition of the vehicle has nothing to do with it.

Welcome to California!

PA was considering a similar law but it's on hold for now. Most of the tow operators I know aren't in favor of it. Cop or no cop there are too many gun crazies around here.

Thanks Guys,
I took and placed my cab on 70 frame not to hard. I got to clean the bottom of cab before putting in place and it was nice not having to do frame prep. I have to start cleaning the front end now. The inner fenders need alot of looking over. I'm trying to learn to take pictures to show online but 1 problem at a time.
