Timing question

My new 390 build has a Edelbrock cam and lifter set in it.
272-282 460-480. Nothing too radical. My question is this...The gurus here recommend the timing on the 390 to be set at 10-12 degrees BTDC. Does this remain the same when using an aftermarket cam like the edelbrock?
Engine specs:
.30 over 9.5:1 CR, 72cc 8AE-H iron heads, 72cc's, Weiand Intake, Holley 600 carb, Mallory electronic ignition and headers.
Engine is in a '77 F250 SC, with a T18 4speed, and a Dana 60 with 410 gears. It should be a real stump puller...

The engine runs great at the factory 6 degrees BTDC, and seems to lug down when I push it back to 11 degrees BTDC.

I haven't been able to road test it yet, as the truck is still partially dissassembled for paint and body work. But I'm really looking forward to taking it out. It sounds strong. It fires right up, and idles with out using the choke.

Just thought I'd ask the masters...

Run as much as it allows, without knocking.

Lug down? It should run BETTER with more timing/better low end. What kind of total timing does it see?
