here we go again

ok well i noticed my oil pressure has taken a hit since i changed the oil.and now im loosing power and performance.could the oil pump be affecting this?and how much of a pain is it really.the manual i have says you have to take off a whole bunch of stuff.so where do you all think i should be looking?i figured changing oil would raise oil pressure and not kill it.

first thing I would do is a oil pressure test with a gauge... just to make sure the dash gauge is working properly. What kind of hit did it take?

The gauge is just a glorified "idiot" light. At 7 PSI or higher you get a reading.
Changing the sender MIGHT run the needle higher up the gauge but you won't really have any more oil pressure.
My PowerStroke always runs right in the middle or slightly high and my '94 has always run on the low side, basically where your's is running.
Every once in a while it will pop up and read higher but it's been that way ever since I've owned it.

I'm eventually going to put a REAL gauge on it.

Dodge is right, the sending unit on your year of truck is a 7 PSI on/off switch so the reading you see is completely meaningless and probably is just a loose connection. If it read like a real gauge it would be low at idle and go up and down with engine RPM. You should see what an aftermarket electric oil pressure gauge reads like. It might as well be a tachometer by how quickly it changes.

My truck SEEMS to read like a proper gauge and will read high when cold, and low at hot idle, but I never tested the sender to see if its a real potentiometer in there and not a switch. I've been told that my year of truck did come with a real oil pressure gauge.

mine holds about 18 psi idling when the engine is up to temp and about 48 psi going down the road warm, when i first crank my engine it holds about 60 idling while the oil is still thick, my dads engine holds 10 psi idling warm and 35 going down the road, its more worn out, but still a great running engine
