Need Help. Fasten Belts light?

When I got my truck nothing on the dash worked at all. The cluster back plate was crumbling so I got a new one "by the way, it sucks spending $100 on something you will never see. While I had the gauges apart I repainted the needles fluorescent red which looks orange to me and all the silver as well. I figured the seat belt light was on a timer to light for 30sec or so then go off but now that it's fixed it stays on all the time. It is not controlled by the wires going to the seat belt clicker I tried that and it turns the buzzer on and off but nothing for the light. I also painted the word HOWDY on the back of the red lens so my truck could say hi every time I got in.

Any help is good help.

Thanks
Shaun & Effy

Ok, the problem could lie in three different problems.

#1: Did you use the printed circut that came with your truck? or did you use a different one? The printed circuts can be different depending on the year.

#2: The wire for the light can be shorted to ground somewhere. It should ground through the buzzer for 15 seconds. (Try unplugging the buzzer and see if the light goes out.) If it doesn't go out, you got a short to ground somewhere. If it does, go to three.

#3: The buzzer has a Thermal circut breaker inside that breaks the ground connection after aproximately 15 seconds depending on age and wear of the breaker. If this is stuck, or broken, it can cause the problem you describe. Only way to fix this is to get another one. It's the green buzzer located next to and above the glove compartment area.

Thanks

Sounds like the thermal switch in the buzzer is bad, when I have the seat belt clasp plugged in to the wiring the buzzer would not stop till I attach the belt, and the wiring is all remover repaired and retaped, sounds like I should have replaced all the relays and switches while I was at it. I found about the buzzer staying on for 3 minutes by sitting in the driveway not by driving without a belt. I wrecked my first truck when I was 16 with my belt on ant it saved my life, took me 10 years to find another 77 f100 302 manual trans. Trucks can be replaced but lives can not.

Thanks again

Thermal switch is bad, but where do I find a replacement?

Yes the thermal switch is bad. I pulled it out and can see a break in the thin wire that is wrapped around the bi metal switch. The buzzer in the 73-79's is not located in the same place as they are on the 81. They are located behind the gauge trim panel to the left on the inside of the pillar.

If you look closely you can see the broken wire. I also did a pin out to help anyone who ever has to do anything with this part.

The wire is to small for me to repair no mater how good I am with a soldering gun. Neither LMC nor NPD stocks this part, I tried Napa, Auto Zone, Advance, Pep Boys, O'Reily, and the dealership. I got squat!

I can't leave it out because I want the light to light, it says HOWDY now and I think it would be cool if my truck would say howdy every time I get in. Also don't want to rig it with and aftermarket timer, I am a t-totaler I want everything that can be stock to be stock.

Here is a pic of what it looks like the text reads:
MOTORCRAFT
HOBBS DIV. SW
^D7AB-10D924-A1A
U.S. Pat. 3,768,158

Any help or ideas?
Oh yea, I did check my local u-pull-it's.

Thanks

That is a Hobbs switch.They are a division of Stewart Warner Gauges.S/W has several websites to look at.You might try and match that switch there.Also,most heavy truck manufacturers use S/W gauges,and Hobbs hour meters.If you have a Peterbilt or Kenworth dealer in your area,they should keep a catalog For S/W and Hobbs.Let us know how you made out.

That same buzzer type was used up until 1983 F-series, Bronco and Econoline if that helps.

They were also used on cars as well.

They might have a different engineering number on them, but most will plug right in and work. Just make sure it's the green buzzer. 1980-1983 trucks also had a white buzzer for headlamp reminder. This is a different buzzer type.

1984-up has a one piece combination belt buzzer, headlamp warning buzzer, and key in ignition etc..

I got it, well I got two. The engineering number is different but it works, it is also as you can see black not green but it says Motorcraft on it so I'm happy.

Thanks every one for all your help.

This post creeps me out.Im 16,and I got in a wreck with my first truck back in February.Technically,I got my F100 first,but it's my restoration project,so my Ranger(the truck I wrecked) was my first truck that I could actually drive on the street.I had my seat belt on in my crash too,and it saved me from hitting the airbag or the windshield.And like you,i'm looking for another Ranger,however i'm not looking for an exact replica.Still haven't found one.The weirder part,is that both out first names are the same,spelling and all.

But back on topic,glad you got your problem fixed.Those buzzers are a real pain.When I first got the F100,the buzzer didn't work.I had taken the dash out to chase down my dash harness,and when I put it all back together,the buzzer magically started to work again.It was weird.

The later ones were color coded.

Green = Seatbelt
White = Headlamp Buzzer

etc...

Glad you got it fixed.
