Another option would be to add the Trucool MAX transmission cooler to your existing cooler. The Trucool units are in use by a number of FTE members who all seem very pleased with them. The Trucool unit itself (Max) is rated at over 40,000 GCVW, and added to your stock unit, it will give you a combined cooling capacity which will tremendously increase the potential life of your tranny. From what can be seen in the tranny life charts, you're probably running well in excess of 200°F with your stock coolers. Lots of folks with additional coolers installed (6.0L units, Trucool MAX units, etc.) report seeing their fluid temps running in the 165°-175° range, which is absolutely EXCELLENT.
What determines whether a truck has the 26 row vs the 31 row? If I were to call a junkyard to locate one, what option/trim/whatever would I want to verify for the 31 row?
'03 & '04s got the 31 row, '05-'07 got the 26 row. I have the 26 row, and it's plenty. I would get whichever you can lay hands on. We're talking a cooler that's 3x as big vs. 3.5x as big. The 26 row made a HUGE difference in mine. 50 degree drop in the trans.
little late but i was running around 195-220 before my 6.0 cooler now the most i have ever seen is 185 on an average it is around 150-165. and it was a very easy swap.
Not to gloat, but I just bought a 31-row from an '04 F350 off Craigslist for $70. Okay, maybe I gloat a little. Two beers in me, let's go see how easy this job is. . .
