Thermostat difference

My engine is coming together nicely, but I'm running into a bit of a snag. The normal parts-house thermostat for an FE, is too small to fit my
C6AZ-H manifold. It slides right thru the hole for the thermostat, and the thermostat flange just barely fits the aluminum water neck. Anyone know what the right thermostat is?

Ask for a Mopar 318-440 stat. Napa # 191. That's a 180* stat. Also Stant # 13078 fits. They can take it from there in the right temp you need.

Not to disagree, there are two t-stat sizes, Bill should know which engines they fit. Your parts house should have both.

Y Block & FE 2 1/2" O.D. Thermostats

1958 thru 12/1/1966: FE t/stats used in cars are 2 1/2" O.D.

After 12/1/1966, FE car t/stats are 2 1/8" O.D.
----------------------------------------------
1965/67 352's in F100/350's are all 2 1/2" O.D.

1968/76, they're 2 1/8" O.D.

All 239/256/272/292/312 Y block t/stats are also 2 1/2" O.D. These same 2 1/2" t/stats are the same as FE's used.

Good indie auto parts stores and NAPA may stock these 2 1/2" t/stats. Blotto-zone, Kragen, Checker and etc. may not.

If y'all cannot find any...

A8AZ8575F .. 190 Degree 2 1/2" O.D. Thermostat (Motorcraft RT19) / Obsolete

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 21 = 800-543-4959.

PARTS INTERNATIONAL in Farmers Branch TX has 12 = 888-727-0418.

KINSEL L/M in Beaumont TX has 8 = 800-816-2894.

BOB ALLEN FORD in Overland Park KS has 5 = 800-676-0675.
----------------------------------------------------------
A8AZ8575E .. 180 Degree 2 1/2" O.D. Thermostat (Motorcraft RT18) / Obsolete

GREEN SALES CO. has 47.

MILLER OBSOLETE PARTS in Binghamton NY has 8 = 800-546-7278.

BOB ALLEN FORD has 8.
-----------------------
A8AZ8575D .. 160 Degree 2 1/2" O.D. Thermostat (Motorcraft RT16) / Obsolete

GREEN SALES CO has 44.

MILLER OBSOLETE PARTS has 36.

ANTIQUE AUTO SUPPLY in Arlington TX has 9 = 817-275-2381.

WESLEY OBSOLETE PARTS in Liberty KY has 9 = 606-787-5293.

Most good autoparts stores can cross Motorcraft part numbers over to the brands they sell.

I should have mentioned the ones I posted about are the larger 2.5" stats. Most stores only list the smaller 2.125" stat for the FE. Somewhere along the line the larger one was dropped as an option it seems.

Go back and get them to look a little harder, I bet they will find it for you.

I went back to Napa, and found one. The application he found in the book was for 50's and 60's Ford truck inline sixes and V-8's (Y-blocks). The part number on the box is 291.

The 291 is a 195* stat 2.49" dia and should fit fine. It's also one of the same numbers listed for a 1970 Dodge 318 engine. Depending on the temp range they have 160*-195*. If you look up say a 64 Ford Galaxie w/390 it shows the same numbers for the same stats. It's all pretty generic. 66-67 was the change over timeframe from the big to small stat housings. So your 66 part number was in the changeover and they are not that specific at NAPA or the chainstores to know it. NAPA online shows the same part numbers for both Ford and Mopar.

Bill thank you for posting the Motorcraft thermostat numbers! I had no idea there was still some out there kicking around. I want to pickup a couple of them. Hope you've been well. I still owe you a phone call.

Saw an 3/8" adapter plate on ebay a few times to convert it to the smaller size made from aluminum looked like a pretty good setup, even came with longer bolts, I think 20 or 25 bucks..
