I have a 2000 f250 V10 4x4 crewcab longbed auto trans and want to change the gears to 4:56 becuase i have a 38 foot toyhauler who makes the best set thats most reliable and trouble free??? also who in the inland empire does good installs of gear sets?
OE is always the first choice. However, most OE gears are built by AAM, who sell them as Motive and several other names. You do need to watch the aftermarket versions, they make levels which can be the same part (right down the markings) as the OE or a cheaper and noisier version. Motive's Performance line is the OE gear set for most manufactures.
Are you running stock tires or larger? 4.56 is pretty low for stock tires, even with a gasser. If your tires are stock I'd recommend 4.30s. I installed Yukon gears 5 months ago and have been very pleased with them. No noise, easy to get the gear patterns right, and much cheaper than Ford gears.
Im looking to get the 3.73's out and upgrade its a Landscape truck f250 reg cab 8ft bed.
NO highway use just around town and Towing all the time and plowing.
Im looking at 4.56 but would like to maybe go 4.88 I have 285 70 16 tires on it and like I said NO highway. want a "stump puller" just upgraded the springs and now need the gears to liven it up!! my 05 with the 4.30's is great but the 3V make more power and has the TQ shift..
4.88 with 32" tires would be snappy, depending on the thread design, you'd probably be right on the edge of traction. I could chirp my 315 BFGs reliably when I put 4.56 gears. The Toyo must be softer because they are difficult to chirp.
If your planning on going to a 35" tire, I would say get the 4.88. If your going to stay with the 285s, then the 4.56 may help out the traction.
Thanks I think Im going with the 4.88 Its a work truck and sees less then 5k a year. It is hauling or towing of plowing 98% of the miles. Good truck in good shape with 192K on it and running good now it time to liven it up!!!
Im looking at the gears on ebay for the Price.
Ford wants 650 per rear... ebay is like 200 per.
Well, most F450s and F550s come with 4.88s stock, so for towing and town use it can't be too low. I think you'll love the new gears. If you have the Ford limited slip you should seriously consider installing a TruTrac while you're at it, I love mine.
ya the 450 /550 have the 4.88 that was why I was looking at them at first.
I know when I ordered my 05 and wanted the 4.30 they were trying to talk me out of it and there was NO WAY I wanted any less and it really helps out. the 3V with the 4.30 is great but that also has 285's I had 35's on it but went smaller for towing and to get an "e" rated tire.
