Okay, from comments by other members, the Pertronix is a great upgrade and sounds yu got a good deal. I hear ya ,, upgraded to electronic ign. on both 65's and noticed significant improvement, particularly with the 390, no longer have a problem trying to start the beast on a cold winter morning. IMHO, its one of the least expensive ugrades, 'more bang for the buck'. congrats.

Petronix has a very large following of mostly happy owners. A few that aren't, but I think mostly they are from not properly installed units.

20 HP in one shot is what I think it gave me. Easier starting too. I love my petronix.

I may consider getting one for my '65 300. Are there specific ones for year, make, and model? Cost and part numbers?

Go to pertronix.com and read about the different products they offer then check the prices on ebay. They seem to be the cheapest. I just ordered the Pertronix Ignitor II for $89 plus the Flamethrower II coil for $35 for my 66 352V8. Should be here any day. The same part number fits 57-74 Ford V8 single point ignitions. They also make one for 4 & 6 cyl.

The one issue with all e-ignitions is failure without warning- always carry a spare set of points, condensor & rotor with you...on more than 1 occaision I have saved a fellow car guy by providing them with my spare set i carry. I personally don't use the e-systems- I found that my aftermarket 50,000 volt coil combined with the Blue streak points/condensor are as close to matching the typical e-systems in rpm's below 6K for street use purposes. At 5000 rpm up, yes the e-systems do have advantage but nothing that a magneto won't out perform.

Unfortunately, still have not been able to add pic's or article to my gallery for future references. Here's a link to an article in my May 09 magazine. If find helpful, may want to print copy, after couple days I remove the pic's from photo storage which deletes the pic from the link.

Oh, by the way, not sure if the plug gap increases with the Pertronix setup, it did with the Duraspark, but does any members know if it increases the ignition timing, I have 2 manual with conflicting spec's.

Actually not sooo easy as that. If you use the Petronix Ignitor II then you must hook it up to a 12 volt source as clearly stated by Petronix in their instruction manual. The Ignitor can be dropped in and set up just like your old points. If you don't use a 12 volt source then the Ignitor II may not work or more likely not work to it's capabilities and then you don't want the increased gap. The issue has confused many as we went over this on my Cougar forum 5 years ago and several of us called Petronix to make sure. The red wire from ignition to the coil is a resistor wire and is no where close to 12 volts at the end. I have spliced into my red ignition wire right behind the ignition switch on the two cars I have the Ignitor II on.

I'm aware that the Ignitor II needs a true 12 volt source. Did you simply run a new wire in to where you spliced into the red ignition wire?
Thanks.

Yes, I left the original system as is per their instructions and ran a new wire all the way back to the ignition switch that was a heat resistant 16 gauge.

Where did you tap in your wire to the ignition switch to get full 12 volts?

Thanks

Right behind the ignition switch after it left the assembly. Since it is a resistance wire there was no issue with tapping in after 2-3" or so out from the switch. Oh, and if older switch the wire might look pinkish some yet should still be obvious...
