Does anyone have any ideas of what can be used to 'box' in the area between the bottom of the truck body and the factory step(nerf??) bars? I am hoping for something not too gawdy but that will stop rock chips, not necessarily a solid piece, but maybe an insert??
Stop rock chips? On the body of the truck or the nerf bars? How are you protecting the rest of the truck if you are talking about the body? You could invest in some mud flaps and/or bigger fender flares.
I have the factory fender flares (wheel opening moldings) and some good flaps but there are still some rocks that get through - I want to keep the paint chips to a minimum. I have installed some 3M in strategic areas as well
I have step bars on my truck and hate them because they provide no protection for the sides of the body and have a limited step area. I found these from Running Boards Warehouse that look as good as the OEM at less than 1/2 the price.
You could pick up a set of the standard superduty steps, they protect the body better, don't hang down as far, have a larger step area, and I think they look better than the chrome steps.

Personally, I think those look the best on the Super Duties for the reasons you stated. I see new OEM sets on eBay for the crew cabs all the time.
