I cant stand my rusty Westin Nerf bars anymore and am looking at ways to salvage them. It is mainly surface rust around the plastic steps, Has anyone taken off the plastic part of the steps ? I have tried to pry one off and the clip broke and i dont want to end up with a totally broken step. Are there any tricks to taking off the plastic insert steps??? OH and im wanting to use a bedliner type material to coat the nerf bars with......anybody tried that ? Thanks for any tips to keep me from totally breaking my steps.
Can't help w/step removal, but it's really all about surface prep in my opinion. I have had 2 different sets painted to match trucks that I had. One set seemed to hold up really well and the other set had to be taken back 2x's because of paint flaking. I had the black nerf bars when I started, not sure what finish you have.

I have the black painted ones, dont know if they are powdercoated or not... I had a set of Chrome Westin bars on my tacoma that i had and they still looked new after 7 years but these painted just arent holding up well at all.
