I had a ford mechanic tell me this is not a catalytic converter, its some type of ash collector. I was also told the f350 didnt come with cats, is this true? All these years ive wanted to do an exhaust but am worried about emmisions.
wow so all these years i coulda had a nice exhaust on my truck. ok im gonna search old exhaust threads.
ill ask real quick if i stay with the 3.5 inch i have now, just cut this thing out and replace it with a foot long piece from napa for 7buks, do the same with the muffler, and get a 3.5 downpipe off ebay or dale.
or would i really notice a difference going with a new 4inch complete system?

Az emissions are easy, just the opacity test. I passed it 6 years in a row and only the first time I went did it have a cat or muffler. Never did they even look under the truck to see what was (or wasn't) there.
Technically, it is still illegal to remove the cat unless you are replacing it. That's federal law. It IS a catalytic convertor too BTW. I worked for Ford for a long time as a mechanic myself. It's not the same as the new diesels have that are called DPF's Diesel particulate filters. Yours is a real cat. It's a totaly worthless one in my opinion due to the temperatures these exhaust systems run at but our government and auto manufacturers thaught it would be a good idea. I think it was one of those feel good laws. They sure don't do a thing for the environment on this engine.
i was also told since my truck is an f350 1 ton, and i pay commercial taxes, i dont need to run a cat. maybe thats why my emmisions ticket says n/a in the cat box. isnt there supposed to be a sticker somewhere on the truck that says if it came with, or is supposed to have a cat?
