This is not an uncommon problem. I suspect it is a problem with a surface mount component similar to the "no/blank display" problem but I have not been able to confirm it. My buddy is a EE with Volvo Truck in Greensboro, NC. I called him tom ask about it and he gave me a nice explanation as to how the electronic compass works. He seems to think it is a contact problem resulting from a broken solder joint which was my suspicision as well. Apparently these solder joints don't like a lot of vibration ane they get some being located where they are in the overhead.
He has offered to attempt a fix for me but I haven't pulled it yet because I can't find any of that foil wrapping that I need to ship an electronic component. I will try to post my results after he takes a stab at it.
My overhead consol is reading Cal with a little square box above it. How do I calibrate it to get the direction back ?
Odd, but mine did the same thing 06.17.09 except it still had the compass heading illuminating. When I went thru the procedure it just went to a blank box. Turned it off and back on and the compass heading came back with no CAL. The compass didn't seem to be reading correctly the next morning, so I did the procedure again and all seems to be fine.
Maybe we got a solar flare or the poles (north and south) are starting to shift!

My problem began as an intermittent problem like yours. Now it only works intermittently.
