oil level question

My manual says I need 4.5 quarts with filter for an oil change. Will I hurt anything if I just put in 5 quarts during my oil/filter change. Truck is a '00 Ranger with the 2.5L. 4.5 quarts takes it right to the top of the full mark.

On another note, when I bought this truck it came with a K&N air filter. I'm not a real big fan of them. What does everyone think about the Fram toughgaurd air filters?

Fill the oil level to the full mark on the stick, and that's all. Why do you want to overfill it?

IMO, ignore the hype and just put in a standard paper air filter.

Dont get the toughgaurd air filter. Its pre oiled and any oiled filter will get your MAF sensor dirty. I had to clean mine twice before I decided to just toss the toughgaurd filter.

Had to pull the codes and go thorough all that just to figure out it was the airfilter.....

A paper fram or whatever is the best.

not really trying to insult your vehicular intellegence but over filling oil in a motor is stupid. it'll end up just leaking out your rear main seal or making another seal leak. Just never good for a motor.

Mine also takes 4.5 quarts. What I do is actually dump in 4 quarts initially and then go from there. If I need more I just dump in more little by little until it's somewhere in the middle of the crosshatch on the dipstick. Overfilling is just asking for trouble! Make sure you do all of this on a level surface so you get an accurate reading of how much oil is in there. As far as the air filters go, I've always just used a paper fram air filter with no issues.

Thanks for the replies. I know it's trivial, but the reason I asked is to keep from storing a 1/2 quart in the limited garage space I have. I've been prefilling the filter with 1/2 quart, then filling the engine with the other 4. After letting the truck sit for several hours, I'll check the oil. comes right at the full mark. I promise, I'll be safe and use the 4.5 quarts that's recommended

I've seen an adapter last time I was on the rangerstation web site that allowed you to put the oil filter on at an angle instead of sideways. Also allows the use of the FL1A filter instead of the 400S.

I was surprised that Walmart charges the same price for a Fram toughguard and the standard paper filter. I think I'll get the paper one to help prevent the MAF from getting dirty.
