well i finally decided that its wasn't worth waiting for a decent deal on a t5 to put my capri back on the road, so I picked up a used c4 for 100 bucks and started to pull the burned up aod out.
it took me 3 hours from first opening the hood to having the tranny on the ground in front of the car. the worst part was getting the starter off, I run long tube equal length headers and have to unbold the engine mount and jack up the engine, pull the pass. header so i can get to the starter! the only other real problem that I encountered was i had a nut on the torque converter round off... while using a 6 point socket. cursing followed. so i decided that i would have to seperate the torque converter and the tranny, which was fine and dandy untill i went to seperate the two and the center shaft for the lockup converter slid out and wouldn't let the tranny drop down! I ended up carefully cutting the rounded nut off so i could pull the two out together.
something that i noticed was that the tv cable was unhooked from the tranny, Im sure that it happened while i was pulling the linkage but it makes me wonder how close it was to coming off before. even if the tranny didn't get sucked full of water, maybe it would have been doomed anyways???
those headers are a pain, but totally worth it! but i can't help but think that with a manual i wouldn't even have to pull the starter... and actually its the only part of the car thats really bad to work on, and even then I could still change my entire drivetrain out in the time it would take to tune up an lt1 in a camaro!
this is a kinda pointless post, but sara is in florida for another 7 days, its her favorite car(we spent our first evening together in it) and im wanting for it to be kind of a suprise for when she gets back. since its been off the road for about 6 months now...
There was a lot of "CAPRISTANG" conversion going on when I was last at Miramar.
The common thought was that they would have all the goodies, and a body that was not tweaked from hard running. Mustang fenders, hood, etc... (entire front clip) were swapped out and a drivetrain with it. PLUS the insurance companies saw it as 'other than a mustang' which was desirable indeed for the lower rates...
probably the best pic i got, even though its almost a year old...
I will be happy when those tall tires are worn down, it did have 245/55r16's on it (255's on the back). almost didn't fit, but made it look like a friggin' steam roller!
the day i found her in the "to be crushed row." Before i got her out somebody got the cowl grille and tore up the chrome windshield trim (i assume to go after the windshield)
IMHO, I dont see why someone would want the mustang clip, the flat front and wide fenders is where its at! plus the bubble hatch is more aerodynamic (although I am not a big fan of the capri taillights and am planning on getting a set of lx lights)
lol, this is bringing an old post back to life, and this all happened last august, but 80 miles after getting the tranny in it the hood opened while driving down the highway...
hoods for capri's are not easy to find! I grabbed what i swear was the only one in a 100 mile radius. I also had to replace the windshield (my first glue in glass replacement) about 200 miles, and about 30 after i picked sara up the engine randomly overheated going 70 down the interstate, by the time I caught it it was blowing blue smoke out the back. I pulled over and killed it, and it blew the lower radiator hose off hard enough to blow coolant all the way across the interstate. and there was no getting it to start again.
RIP, as I am pretty sure that I have had that little 302 pushing me way faster than what my tires and chassis should have been able to safely do.
unfortunately i can't work on it much since i have been halfway across the country for the past 5 months, however I have made a deal on a good roller 5.0 that I can rebuild, cause I bought it a doug nash road race 4+1 tranny and an eaton m112 supercharger, and i intend to go with a megasquirt on it as well. I have also been looking at bbs style ims, torque arm suspensions and SVO seats...
im not completely sure, but i think it wasn't latching all the way. when I got the other hood i noticed that it had a safety latch. not sure what happened to the one off the original.
