Torque converter: rounded off hold-down nut

I have tried all the "normal" stuff. Heat, PB Blaster, different sockets. The bite-into-rounded-nut tool I own won't work because the tool OD is too large for the hole in the flywheel.

Where I am now: well-rounded nut.

Thoughts would be appreciated.

Is the stud easily replaceable, if I bung it up in the process?

I have never pulled a torque converter on any vehicle, ever.

Thanks,

Roy

that's a real bugger too because you can't get a set of vice grips on it due to being recessed in the trans.

what you want to do is carefully, slide the trans back.leaving the converter on the felxplate.now with the trans back out of the way,you can heat it up good.clamp the vise grips onto it like you really mean it,nice and straight and give 'er hell.
ideally you would have slid the trans back before you totally rounded the nut.then tap on a 6 point socket then she would have listened.now your pretty much stuck with a nut splitter or the grips.or perhaps using a chisel and start smacking it to cut into it and it might spin off that way too.first things first, is to get the trans down and out,or at least way back.just be careful and keep the trans loose.don't lower too much before you bring it back or you'll bind things up and could cause damage.

be careful with the threads.take your time.if you frig them up,you'll just have to bolt it back up with 3 nuts.not the end of the world but ideally you'll save the stud.

This is a frame-off. The tranny is way off the truck. But the nut is recessed into the flywheel. I have not tried vise-grips, but I will. I suspect, access won't allow vise grips, even long-nose models, to get to the nut.

Thanks

Metric sockets and a hammer can be your friend.

Converter studs are not replaceable, try not to destroy them. If you do the converter is still good for a core, or a wheel chock.

The damn things are metric to begin with...or, so it seems. One of the things I don't like about this truck is the mix of metric and SAE.

Yes...hammer.

Right...treat the stud with as much care as possible.

Thanks,

Roy

Mac tools and snap-on both have socket sets for rounded nuts as well as specialized tools to take them off. Good investment for any mechanic.

I have such a set by Craftsman. But, the recess in the flywheel makes it impossible to use it, as is. I might end up modifying the tool.

88,

Just too tight in there...at lease for my welding skills. I would end up with EVERYTHING welded together.

2007,

That's the point of what I'm doing.

Today is another day. It has had Liquid Wrench on it all night. Will do more, then more heat, then....

I was planning on trying that today. I can picture some relief cuts to the nut.

I will also consider buying buy a HF right-angle die grinder and use Dremel burrs,

Have you tried pulling the starter and turning the engine till that bolt is accessible thru the starter hole?

Grind the chamfer off a socket and try that, regular sockets are chamfered so deep that they only grip the top 1/8 of the convertor nut.

Turner,

No. Thanks. Will try that today. Access is everything.

Type4,

Thanks. You got that right...that is probably what caused my problem in the first place.
