I changed to Mass Air awhile back for a long reason. Everything running excellent. But....yes there is a "BUT". I went offroading and busted the secondary air injection system. The "silencer or muffler" as it is called. The contraption at the end of the hose from the air pump. My question is -- Does the Mass Air system need the air pump and the secondary air injector "known as the Silencer or Muffler"? BTW- the part number is E7TZ-9H467-B and it is $1300 at the ford dealer but $20 at the junkyard.
In any event the EFI system hardly knows the air injection system exists, so you can completely eliminate the pump, all the tubing and diverter valves, and associated vacuum lines without setting a code as long as the TAB and TAD solenoids remain electrically conected.
My 95 has been running without the smog pump for at least the last 30k without issue. The pump, vacuum hoses and wiring are all there but the hose from the pump to the cat rotted away and I just plugged the port on the cat. If it was going to poison and clog the cat I'd think it would have happened by now. More importantly, it passed the emissions test with flying colors. The smog pump is supposed to supply a little extra O2 downstream of the HEGO to burn off that last little bit of fuel. So much for the "visual inspection". I think it went about as far as, "Yup, it's a truck".
E7TZ-9H467-B is $1300 at the ford dealership. I figured as much to eliminate but in my case, in california visual inspection won't fly. I found one anyways for $15 at the junkyard.

Other than your breaking a federal act and could be fined upwards of 10thousand dollars.

Yes in some juristictions.. but why does it matter what equipment is present if the engine passes emissions sniffer tests? Yes.. I know.. it's the letter of the law and there's no arguing with incomplete, misdirected, misintrepreted regulations.

Not some, all... they may not enforce it in some places but its still a federal act. Why give fuel to those that are already opposed to our trucks on the road, we already have an uphill battle when it comes to keeping our big "Monster Trucks" - words the media use to describe us, on the road? We are already seeing trucks pulled off the road and requiring a re-certification from an automotive engineer to get them back on the road. This is not the same as a safety inspection so good luck with that.
We are already targets to law officials, and we have taught them that 7 out of 10 of us have something illegal or unsafe on our trucks. We need to pay close attention to the acts and regulations when modifying our rigs so we can stand on the same legal footing as everyone else and be treated fairly.
