I need a little input here. I have an '05 F150 5.4 litre FX4. I bought it used on Halloween. It has about 55000 miles on it. It did something strange to me friday evening. Twice. I was highway driving (70 mph) slowed to make a turn and then had to come to a complete stop to wait and make another turn, and when I did, the engine died. I was running the AC on max. It also did it a little later in a parking lot. When I put it in neutral and cranked it, it cranked right up. I have noticed lately that the idle seems a little low when she's warmed up - idling at about 600-700 rpm (I'm thinking 800 is more in line with normal). Anyway, another thing she seems to be doing is a little surging at very low speeds when cold. Does this sound like a fuel filter issue? Check engine light is not on. I haven't put my code reader on it yet.
Back when my Ranger was fairly new, it would consistently die coasting to a stop at a specific intersection on the way home from work. The dealer suggested trying a different brand of gas as some did not have the proper vapor pressure (can't remember if was too low o high, probably low). Sure enough, another brand of gas stopped that issue.
Could be bad gas or a combibation of gas, dirty fuel filter and air filter. I'd change the filters, use a good detergent gas and see what happend. If it keeps it up you should check the idle air control valve.
I know this may seem un-related, but I had the exact same thing happen on my last motorcycle (2003 Yamaha R6). A lot of people said the issue may have been with a bad/faulty TPS. Never had a chance to replace it because I sold the bike before I could try it.
Okay. How would I go about checking the IAC if the gas issue doesn't resolve it. I did get gas at a different station than I normally do friday evening. And then the tank before that was bought at another station I normally don't buy gas at. Maybe the gas is to blame. I'll check the air filter and my next oil change is due pretty soon so I'll get a fuel filter change then too. But this idle air control valve... I gotta figure out where its at and how to check it.
My '05 FX4 did it every once and a while when at a stop also, but when I bought a programmer more than 3 years and a half years ago, it never did it again. I've heard of other people here that has had the same engine stalling problem. I believe the problem lies in a glich in the ecm. Mabye someone can chime in on this.
The glitch is sometimes the IAC. The PCM communicates with the IAC and based on that communication the IAC lets air bypass the throttle body to maintain proper idle speed. Sometimes the valve goes bad.
Unfortunatly my service manual doesn't have a pic of the IAC. If memory serves, its back behind the TB...somewhat difficult to get to.
If it only does it when your a/c is on full blast then you may want to get your battery and altenator checked sounds funny, but these trucks do weird things when it comes to electrical problems. I have had a few vehicles that when the bass would hit on my system or I did anything to draw more power my rpm's would flutter a little bit. Usually caused by pulling more power than my altenator could put out.
