Steering Wheel

My current steering wheel is in working order but has a number of large cracks in it. I would like to replace it, but I have had trouble finding a place on line where I can order a OEM steering wheel.

Any suggestions?? Is there a good replacement for the OEM wheel??

You might check with some of the site sponsors here. There are reproduction wheels available. I've repaired cracks in them with JB Weld and never had a problem.

Some of the cracks are pretty severe. I had not thought of JB Weld. I'll give that a try before getting a new one. Thank you!

Welcome to FTE

D4TZ3600A .. Black Steering Wheel / D4TZ-3600-A replaced D1TZ-3600-A, B & C.

Fits: 1971/72 F100/350 / 1973/77 F100/350 without Cruise Control / 1974/77 Bronco.

WESLEY OBSOLETE PARTS in Liberty KY has TWO: 606-787-5293.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has TWO: 800-543-4959.

These may be NOS originals, they may be reproductions, because....

D4TZ-3600-A has been reproduced by denniscarpenter.com

NOTE: The horn pad does not come with the steering wheel. It was only sold by itself.

The horn pad fits the same applications as the steering wheel.

Without Cruise Control: There are two different horn pads. One is all black, one is wood grained.

I'd suggest you vee the edges of the cracks a bit with a file then use a small stick or something to force The compund in as far as possible.

Is yours a 67-70 or a 71-72? In 71 they went to the slightly smaller wheel with two spokes, the same basic style they used through the 80s. Before that was the giant thin-rimmed three spoke wheel.

In September 1973, Ford replaced the 1971/73 steering wheels which were offered in several colors, with the 1974 steering wheel (D4TZ3600A) which was only available in black.

This same wheel was used thru 1977, but is not the same steering wheel used on 1975/77's with Cruise Control.

I forgot to mention that 1975/77 Econolines also used D4TZ3600A.
----------------------------------------------------------------
1971 and later F100/350 steering wheels used a horn pad, not a horn ring or horn button which were last used in 1970.

1971/77 steering wheels are 16 1/2" in diameter. 1978/79 steering wheels are 16" in diameter with manual steering, 15" in diameter with power steering.

1961/62 F100/250 2WD: The 3 spoke steering wheel is the same as 1960/62 Falcon/Comet: 17" in diameter.

1963/66 F100/250 2WD & 1967/70 F100/350 2WD/4WD: The 3 spoke steering wheel is the same as 1963 Falcon/Comet, 1966/73 Bronco: 17" in diameter.

1961/66 F100/250 4WD's and F350/600's used a 4 spoke steering wheel: 18" in diameter.

btw: Yes, I did look...no Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has the original 1971/73 Blue, Red or Green steering wheels.

That was going to be my next question. Mine is green. Thank you very much!

The center section in my '72 was torn off and the horn wired via a toggle switch on the bottom of the dash (nice...). Found out that the proper wheel and center cover are abit more expensive than some of the aftermarket jobs, which are nicer wheels. Since I don't care about the originality, I decided to save some coin!

What kind of an aftermarket wheel did you go with? What size did you use? I have had trouble finding one as large as the original.

It's the non-wood(foam w/plastic coated exterior), 3-spoke job w/ a "Ford" script horn button that LMC peddles. It's diameter is a little smaller, but not by much

Are there three exposed chrome spokes and just a simple round horn button?

If so, it's similar to: D7OZ-3600-A, the "sport" steering wheel offered on 1978/79 F100/350's & Bronco's / 1977/79: T-Bird's, LTD II's (NOT LTD's!) Cougars and 1978/79 Fairmonts.

IF you have a 1978/79 with Cruise Control, this wheel will not work, because there is no place to install the Cruise Control Off/On - Set/Resume switches.
