i got this motor from friend for free.he said it was a 351w but that is what he was told when he got it.i cant find the casting numbers in the block but i want to know if it is a 351.it has the spot for a mac fuel pump but it looks like it was never cut out for one,but is a carbed motor.6 bolt valve covers.what can i do?
Post a picture of it, if you can't do that tell me if the base of the distributor is flush with the intake gasket or if it's about an inch below the gasket surface. You could also measure th width of the intake.
You say you have 6-bolt valve covers, so we know we're in the right engine family. The 302 manifold is about 8.5" wide and the 351W is closer to 11". Here's an easier way to tell though:
The arrow in the second pic is pointing right to the place you need to look. That particular engine is a 289/302 so the parting line for the head/block is right at the top of the water pump boss as indicated in the first image. Look for about a one-inch gap here to indicate that it's a 351W.
ok i am pretty sure it is a 5.0 the manifold is like 8 1/2 or 9" wide and it looks like the base of the dizzy is even with the intakes gasket.i found 1 code on the block E3AE D3C.as far as i can tell that meens it is a 83 block.but why is there the mounting spot for the man fuel pump but the hole itself is not machined out?so you cant actually put one on.

Yes that's a 5.0.

Yep.

Ford was using electric fuel pumps on some vehicles at the time so the mechanical pump was no longer needed and they hadn't got around to redeisigning the timing cover so it was just left unmachined to prevent leaks.
