I just changed my filters tonight for the 1st time. I used the 36mm socket 3/4 drive. Got it from Sears. Was able to use a wiggle tail and short extension for the frame mounted filter to get it on/off.
No real issues doing the frame or engine mounted filter, but went to start it after the 6 times of on/off with the key and I would only get about 2-4 seconds of run time and then it would die.
Well, thought I would post this as the issue was the fuel pump cutoff switch. Mine is so sensitive that I had to be held down while cranking and then it took off.
So though I would share this new wrinkle in changing your filters with everyone so they don't have to have it towed!
I don't think it has anything to do with the o-rings and torque specs. Same thing happened to me and just had to cycle the key about 20 times and then it finally kept running. I heard this can be avoided if you fill the filters with diesel before you put them back on. But maybe that was some bad info that I got.
After it would not start I did that, in fact when I took the bottom filter loose again, I did not drain it as I want to see if it was even getting fuel..so my drive has plenty on it now as it was fuel. My issue was the cutoff switch that had to be held down after the cycleing of the key.
Cutoff switch is located on the passenger side. Open the passenger front door and it is right there on the side of the dash that meets the door. Just a little square piece of plastic to remove and you can see the switch.Hard part was holding it down while cranking. May not be an issue for most but it would appear that mine is overly sensitive so that is what I had to do.
I'm about ready to change out the fuel filters on my 2008 F450 w/ the 6.4 diesel for the first time. Read this post and it contained great information, but a few questions.
Bought the 36 MM socket yesterday based on info here.
What torque is required on the filters/caps?
When removing the existing filters, does diesel fuel leak out when removing caps? Is the fuel line/system still under pressure?
Any other words of advice? Appreciate all your input and suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

Reason: typos
Refer to your owners manual for Torque specs, don't have mine in front of me right now but I beleive for the frame one it is 20 ft. lbs and the one on the engine is 40 ft. lbs.
Drain some fuel out of the fuel/water separator before you remove the cap on the frame one, otherwise you will wear some fuel.
You will also find that the one on the frame is a little difficult but not that bad, just takes a little manuvering.
Be sure to coat the new o-rings with oil before using.
OK, just spoke with the local Ford Dealer's service department. They say torque both filter caps to 18 pounds, does this sound correct to you experts out there who have already done this?
I like my diesel truck, but don't want to smell like one, so I:
1. Attach a 6" piece of fuel line to the seperator's drain and allow fuel to drain into a 2 gal. bucket.
2. Shortly after starting to drain, I loosen the engine mounted filter cap.
I really feel that using the hose and "venting" the engine mounted filter helps in draining down the rail filter. In total, I probably drain off about 1.5 gallons of fuel. Don't want to offend global warming idiots by waisting our precious resources, so I use it to kill weeds.
I went from taking diesel baths to not much more than a few drips.
