1966 springs?

I have a 66 ford truck that I swapped the engine from a 6 to a 302.
My question is, are the front springs for a v8 different than the 6 springs?
and if so where can i get some v 8 springs?

Welcome to FTE

1965/66 F100/250: There were three different front coil spring load rates.

The coil springs were ID'd by painted color bands...but today, these may be worn off.

1055 lbs: 6 cylinder only / R/S (1) yellow stripe / L/S (1) blue stripe.

1175 lbs: 6 or V8 / R/S (1) red stripe / L/S (1) grey stripe

1250 lbs: 6 or V8 / R/S (1) orange stripe / L/S (1) green stripe

You can get Moog brand replacement springs at rockauto.com for about $80. They are supposed to be a good replacement, but only one part# is offered and the spring rate is not listed.

Bill,
I recall reading somewhere that the coil springs were different from L to R sides...specifically, that the L side is a taller spring and that the shorter, R side spring will be thicker wire diameter. The reason posted was to compensate for the engine offset to the R side. Does your data indicate/confirm the R to L differences?

Do you have any related spring wire diameter thickness data to help determine which spring rate coil spring a person has?

Thanks!

Notice that I didn't post the part numbers for the right and left coil springs.

Just the ID colors of the right and left coil springs.

Since there's no ID numbers on these springs, and the springs are obsolete, I didn't bother with the part numbers.

Wire diameters are not listed for coils until 1973.

Call Stengel Bros, INC., in Whitehall PA. I had them make up front and rear springs for my '65 F250. Contact 610-433-3149, Leaf Springs and Air Ride Suspension specialists offering Timbren kits, helper springs, and Air Lift kits..

Great quality work, I am very happy with what I got.

Thanks, Bill ! I didn't realize that is what the R/S & L/S indicated.
I'll re-fill my coffee now....

Thanks, Ken, for the supplier info.
I will call them to see if they have any spring wire diameter information...

HAVE A GREAT DAY, FELLAS!

If anyone else is interested:

I called Eaton Detroit Spring, Detroit, MI. (313) 963-3839.

According to the fella there, their data indicated these stats for a 2WD, 1965 F250s:

-- The RIGHT HAND side coil spring wire diameter was 0.705" and had a free standing height of 15 5/8".
-- The LEFT HAND side coil spring wire diameter was 0.677" and had a free standing height of 16".

He could not provide a spring load rate for the above springs and a second spring rate wasn't listed.
I realize this info contradicts what Bill said....

......so for what it's worth - that's what I found out anyway.

How so?

I said the wire diameters are not listed until 1973...and by that, I meant in the Ford truck parts catalogs, the only info source I have for springs.

This is all the info the 1964/72 truck parts catalog lists for 1965/66 F100/250 coil springs.

1055 lbs: C5TZ5310J .. R/S Coil Spring (Yellow stripe) / C5TZ5310K .. L/S Coil Spring (Blue stripe) / 240/300 only.

1175 lbs: C5TZ5310M .. R/S Coil Spring (Red stripe) / C5TZ5310L .. L/S Coil Spring (Grey stripe) / 240/300/352.

1250 lbs: C5TZ5310N .. R/S Coil Spring (Orange stripe) / C5TZ5310P .. L/S Coil Spring (Green stripe) / 240/300/352.

The information contradiction is that Eaton Detroit Spring claimed there was only one Rside and Lside coil spring produced for the 2WD, '65 F250s.
Now I'm no engineer, however, it seems to me that since there is only one wire diameter and free height specification provided, that would indicate that there would only be one load rating offered.

Whereas, your information indicates three different load ratings were offered and were marked accordingly.
To me, this hints that there were three physically different sets of springs.
Now I supposes just because they had different paint stripes doesn't necessarily mean they were physically different springs (i.e., with different wire diameters and free height lengths)....

Am I making sense?
