speedo issues

OK so my 77 f350's speedo is not working. I put in a new cabl, tryed 3 diffrent speedometers, put a new gear on the end of the cable.

the speedometer will work until it reaches 20 mph then it jsut falls back to 0 until i press in the clutch then it jumps to 20 again, bounces around there then falls back down.

could this be the gear inside the tranny on the outdrive shaft is bad. or what else is there that could be casueing the problum.

the cable was just relubed. the gear on the end of the cable is a brand new 16r gear. also i lubed the end of that gear when i placed it back in the tranny.
if it is the gear in the tranny. were would i go to find one, or what should it look like. so i can compare it to mine in my truck.

The type of output shaft speedometer DRIVE gear depends on which transmission you have.

And...the problem could be caused by the speedometer head itself.

The speedometer heads used on 1977/79 F100/350's are the same as 1977/86 Econolines.

the gear on the tranny end of the cable is the same as the old one its a 16t r gear, and i testes the speedometer by hooking the cabel to a drill and seeing if it worked.
im about to pull the end off teh tranny and check the gear in there what should i look for on that gear

I'm not asking about the DRIVEN gear on the end of the cable.

I need to know what transmission the truck has.

Do not pull that extension housing off until you answer my question.

You might be wasting your time and effort.

It's a 4 speed New Process which has a particular colored plastic gear on the output shaft.

It could have a 6, 7 or 8 tooth gear. It depends on the tire size, rear axle ratio, transmission.

If you don't know the axle ratio, the AXLE code is on the Warranty Plate. There may be a ID tag on the inspection cover.

If it had been a C6, the gear on the output shaft is made as part of the shaft, so it isn't available by itself.
