Ive got an '02 PSD 6 spd...is a trans temp gauge necessary for a manual tranny?

Someone once told me putting a tranny temp gauge was "Like putting a tie on a pig" lol, but I put a tranny gauge on mine.

From what I have heard it is not necessary. The temp guage's purpose is to monitor the oil temperature before it start burning clutches in the tranny.

I'm actually thinking of putting another temp sensor for my oil or water temp and install a toggle switch on my tranny gauge and be able to flip back and forth. Is this doable?

Depends on what you're doing, but regardless it's cheap insurance. The ones included on the '02 MY and up trucks are glorified idiot lights that have 3 settings: Cold, Operating Temp, and "Oh! Sorry, meant to tell you your trans was getting too hot, too late now." Check out this article: Stock Ford Trans Temp Gauge Operation

I've seen mine get as high as 235* pulling a nice load up a huge long high altitude grade in the Sierra Nevada's torturing the truck. That's the main reason I put new syn ATF in every 50k miles, and I'm closing in on 250k so it'll be the 5th time I've replaced the fluid!

I put a toggle to switch between my trans and rear diff sending units.

I know you guys like pics. Here's some of the plate I made for the sending unit, but you can buy one from a sponsor I'm sure. I didn't like the idea of a sending unit facing straight down from a plug type setup.

That's awsome looking Andy. Do you have a pic of where you placed the sending unit on the rear diff.?

I drilled and tapped the cover. I ran the wire up and along the speed sensor wiring to the frame.

Say... that looks like one of my other money pits in the background... I've been building a 351W for it!
