New toy,Old title problems.

Here is the run down,I bought the Mercury from one guy but his buddy's name is on the title as well as his wife or who ever. He never changed it over. Who I bought it from forged the signature of his buddy but not the second owner. I have a bill of sale with the guy I bought it from with his name, his address, and everything. I have no way of finding who the registered owners are or where they are.

What am I to do?
I'll be damned if I lose this car.

Thanks guys.

You might be able to find the owners. Go to your state's dep't of transportation website. With the VIN and license #, you might be able to find who it's registered to.

Probably won't help much if the guy that sold it to you is ripping off his buddy and wife/gf. If that's the case they will at least want a cut. Your Merc might qualify as a stolen vehicle.

Can you still find the guy who sold it to you? Is it possible that he's actually honest and was just trying to save time?

If you think that he's a crook, you probably need to find a lawyer.

I know where I bought the car at,VIN....doubt it. '66 doesnt have a VIN. I tried to call him,No answer but it was like that before I bought it. I'll call him again. I really don't want to lose this car.

I would put pressure on the guy you bought the car from to get you clear title. Tell him you will go to the State police/registry/whoever handles titles in your state, if he can't do that. You've already got some (at least) time invested) in the car, so let him know that reversing the sale isn't acceptable.

Unless I'm extremely mistaken, a '66 should have VIN too! All my early Mustangs had VINs...

the VIN can be found in three different places on the car.
#1 on the driver side door warranty plate. (if the door has not been changed)
#2 on the driver side inner fender, halfway between the front of the car and the hood hinge. it may be covered by the outer fender, but should be at least partially visible.
and #3 on the driver side front frame in the area of the motor mount.

Im talking VIN as in the new ones. If you're talking about serial numbers,Then yes it has one. I'm talking to the guy I bought it from.

the VIN (vehicle identification number) stays with the car, and there is no way to change it.
the VIN is a technical term for the cars serial number.

Got it straightened out. I called the guy I bought it from and then talked to his buddy who is the registered owner and he did say it was ok to sell the vehicle. To make a long story short, the registered owner is mad at his buddy for forging the signature but it all worked out.....Thank god.

Thanks for the help guys.

ah **** like that happens.

When I bought my mercury he forgot to sign the back of the title but he signed the bill of sale and everything else. I had to wait 2 months for him to come back from seattle so I could get him to sign the title because the DMV here wouldnt take it. Said that I could have forged the bill of sale. Yea I forged the bill of sale but not the back of the title.

That happened to me before. It may not be the most legal way or honest, but whos gonna know! Just have someone else sign the other owners name and then make up a bill of sale with the peoples names that are on the title and then transfer away. I dont know about your state but i have done that several times and never got in any kind of trouble.
