DP Tuner in, is this normal?

I love my DP Tuner tuner, I may just need to get used to a couple of things. I've noticed that when coming to a stop, the engine RPMs drop way down to 500 or less for a second or two, and then back up to a normal idle. Even my 13 year-old asked why it sounded like it was going to stall. It probably isn't a big deal, just wondering if others have the same issue. The other thing is the down shifting, is that to help slow you down? Or maybe to keep the engine in the "power band" for lack of a better term? I'm sure that's the way it's supposed to be, just not used to it.
This may sound like a silly question as well, but I'll ask anyway, I'm not too proud. A friend that has never even owned a diesel told me that I should not park it and shut it off, but I should put it in and let it high idle 1100-1200 for a couple of minutes, then normal idle for a couple more minutes before shuting it down. This sounds a little out there, though I'm too nice to tell him so. I could see if I just towed a heavy load up a hill to let it idle for a few minutes. Is this guy blowing smoke?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

I believe the "about to stall" thing is just your TC staying locked up longer.

I wouldn't go as far as high idle/low idle/ shutdown, but I do let mine idle for a minute or so before taking off or shutting down.

My truck used to do that with DP -- might still with Tony's tunes. I don't even notice it anymore if it does.

Not sure what you're asking about with the downshifting. Are you staying it's downshifting too much? That SHOULD depend on the tune your running to some degree. Have you tried some of the other tunes?

On the cool-down thing, you got it right. I idle mine long enough to get to my driveway from the end of the alley, then in the driveway for a short time. I don't go out of my way. If you just pulled off the road after towing up a hill heavy... Let the EGTs get down -- most say ~300 degrees, but I've shut mine off hotter than that.

The reason you notice it now is because he is having it downshift with the TC locked. Usually, my understanding is stock the TC locks and unlocks everytime you get on and let off the gas.

He is right if you have been doing anything to created excess heat and to let it dissipate, but just at normal idle. Just watch your Pyro and you will be able to tell. I shut down anytime as long as its under 400*F , but that just me. If you don't have gauges now is the time...

I will call Jody sone to ask him but since I'm here.I sent back my tune for new updates and now it will down shift at 45 mph, most of my driving to work is around 45-50 mph and now it up shift and down shift way to much and is irritating but i like how it will down shift on the decel tune. Can Jody take out the down shifting on all my tunes except my decel.

Yep, just ask him for no downshift tunes. Or let me know and I will help you out.

Have you considered just going back to stock during those speeds? I like the way it down shifts but I understand your gripe. When it happens to me that I am in that speed region I just pop it back into 1 and ride on.

I guess mine just stays in OD and thus I never have that problem in those speeds. I like just popping it in stock and cruising, especially if I hit bumpy gravel roads around Alaska. I did pop it back into 80e coming home today and had a freaking blast.

If you wanted fun, why are we worried about 45-50mph?

Because it used to just stay in overdrive and since most of my driving speed is in that range it goes in and out every minuet or two.

I kept mine in 1 today while I was driving in a town with speeds in that region and it seems my truck just stays in OD and might shift out if I apply extra gas. I put it back to 80e and I did experience what you are complaining about.

I suppose you should get with DP or Clay and have the down shift removed from the tune, if you don't feel like switching back to stock. That does also mean that when you ask for a little more grunt (at that speed) that the truck may end up having to down shift to get up and go. It could end up being like the opposite problem of now. Once I got used to the downshift, I enjoyed having the power on tap.

But either way at your cruising speed it will still be easier to remove the down shift.
