There is the glow plug relay, then there is the relay, which is like the old gas solenoids to put power to the solenoid on the starter.

The heavy battery cable runs to the starter, then the relay controls the solenoid on the starter. What the deal is, the starter draws too uch power to run through the ignition switch, so the ignition switch controls the relay, which then controls the starter solenoid. Basically, the wiring goes: Batter to relay, relay to solenoid energizing wire. Big eyelet on the relay, small eyelet on the starter, about a 12 gauge wire. I had to do this on my cummins since the ignition switch was dropping too much voltage to energize the solenoid on the starter, had intermittent starter problems until zI put the realy out there like this arrangement.

You have to use the feed from the ignition to control the relay before the starter of course. The original starter solenoid for the gas motor would be hooked up just like it was for the gas motor, and the wire that would have gone to the starter on the bolt tab now goes to the small pin on the diesel starter. Yes, it's that simple....

Unhappy

ok the glow plug relay is wired up, and i took one of the wires that went to the gas relay on the small post "S" and put it on the glow plug relay to give it power, now i wired up the gas relay with the battery cable to one side and the small cable to the small post of the starter and the "I" cable to small post of relay, and another battery + cable to the + post of the starter. Is that correct??? because it doesnt do anything, and when i put the keys in the ignition everything workd in my truck, lights dash and etc, but when i turnd the key to start it everything shut off and nothing workd after that. im CONFUSED

Well, it seems right ... batt to big lug on one side of the relay, other big lug to small lug on diesel starter, battery cable direct to the big lug on the diesel starter. Question: do you have a ground cable to the motor securely, as well as one to the body? Have you tried jumping the relay to see what happens? Have you verified you have 12 v getting to the relay from the ign switch, or that 12 v is getting to the starter?

Oh, and had to work today, as do many of us, so we can't always be here...

The S terminal should be hot when the key is turned to start position.
, so it need to trigger the starter relay.

No I terminal on the diesel starter relay is used.

I should be hot when the key is in the run position if I remember right.
Long time since I worked on a gas motor truck.

The relay will be hooked up just like before, except maybe the wire that went to the safety switch might not be used, as you no longer have that trans. I believe it is the red wire that is supplied 12 v when turning the key. It sounds like you may have a different starter than what we use.
