hi all, just found out that my 97 f250 hd 4x4 longbed, no longer had to pass emisions in the state of mass. so i wanted to re-do the entire exaust system. i wanted to put on headers first, wich starts with the first problem, on the passeger side the manifold has the egr hookup, so i found headers that will except that, but there is also something on the driverside manifold. not sure what this one is because it runs behind the motar, but the headers i found has no hook up for this side. i was on summit racing for the headers, and had none for 97 so i used 96, seeing there pritty much the same. so is this something that can be removed, or have the exaust shop drill a hole in the header and weld something over it to except this? so now past the headers i want to remove the 3 foot cat. and run a dual exaust instead of the 2 into 1, is there room for this? i dont know if there is room on the drivers side beacause of the duel fuel tanks and all the break lines and such. any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated!
youd probably be better off with a 2 into 1 single exhaust anyhow for ease of installation and performance. and as far as i know from talking with my inspection station in mass unless your truck is pre-1994 it has to pass emissions, but if you setup your exhaust correctly passing emissions wouldnt be an issue anyways. massachussetts is picky on people adding duel exhausts to cars that werent originally equipped with it and ive seen people fail inspection becuase of it, so you might want to seriously consider a nice single exhaust, since ive seen state troopers even give people a hard time because of it.
if its a 460 you have- paasenger side is a air tube not egr yo don't need to connect that into your new exhaust it just pumps air into exhaust to fool the emissions test on driver side there is another air tube and a bigger tube that is your egr most headers have the egr hole and o2 sensor hole on the y-pipe
i say run the duals. cant beat the sound. do like i did. run the tubes on the drivers side like they are run on the passenger side, and put em outside the frame rails with a kick out right in front of both rear tires.
I would have to agree on dumping the tips in front of the rear wheels.....
Any ideas on a upgrade exhaust for a 1994 F-150 2x4 Long wheel base w/ a 4.9l?

header, with 2.25 to 3 inch tubes all the way back and a Y pipe for outlet, again in front of both rear tires.
Ok, thanks mang....
Ummm, here's a thought.
What about a H or a X pipe?
Also what about mufflers/glasspacks?
On the Crown Victoria LTD I have a 351w with a set of 2.25" Exhaust pipes, H-pipe, Silver bullet Glasspacks and a set of 3" Stainless Steel exhaust tips......
Was just wondering if any of those effect those sound in a + or - way?

are you referring to your post or the original? cause a 300 six would not need an H or X pipe. and for the original poster, H and X pipes are designed because they are better for smooth engine performance. it equalizes back pressure on the exhaust valves for both banks of the engine. X pipes are better than H pipes cause they do a better job of equalizing, improve flow, and ensure that no gases are stuck idle in the system. however, it compromises the sound of true dual exhaust because you get the notes of the other bank playing on the wrong side. personally, i prefer the true duals for the sound, and the amount of "help" H and X pipes are supposed to provide to the engine really dont amount to a hill of mold covered beans. i say duals, every time. my $.02.
Even though you don't have to pass the stupid dyno test anymore the inspector will do a visual check to make sure the emission components are intact. Is this is a 97 F 250 HD (old style) than you don't have to pass he OBDII plug in test. There getting much more stringent about noise and suspension lifts.
Dual looks cool but a good 2 into 1 will wok as well if not better.

yes it is the older body style (looks like a 96) with the obd1? and another question...if i was to run the duels what would i do about the fact that there is only one o2 cencor?
well seeing as its a 4x running duel exh would be a pain in the **s because of the transfer case. on my 95 351w i just did my exhaust with summit shorty headers, 2.5" off that with mandral bends into a flowmaster y pipe that expands into 3.5" no cats and an old school 40 series big upgrade in torque and power. gonna be getting a 10 series soon tho too quite for me soon to have a 4" tip too gonna get funny looks after that lol
anything can be straight piped and with the right diameter pipe will get the best performance at the rpm range your looking to use ie higher or lower but the down falls are in the noise that people usually get tired of a single 2.5 or dual 2-2.25 i would think would be good for strait pipe on the 300 good for low rpm power
i have a friend in my class that has a 94 f150 and a 300 six with a 5 speed. he put a true strait pipe on it. from the manifold to the tip is one solid tube. the truck is quieter than my 460 was the original exhuast. its weird stuff...
