This seems like a stupid question, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere else.
I'm going to re-do the exhaust system on my little 4-banger Ranger, and based on what I've read on this forum (and others) I will be going with a 2 1/4 pipe.
Myself, I'd be very hesitant to use the 2.25". That is a great size for a 4.0L, but the 2.3L is much smaller. If you ran 2" pipe with a performance muffler of some kind, I think you would see more torque across the board. To take advantage of 2.25" pipe you would have to keep the engine revved up, which defeats the point of having a 4 cyl. Now if you had a turbo, I would say that 2.25" is the best size. I just don't think a stock 2.3L can take advantage of that size pipe.
On your actual question, it is the OD of the pipe. Converters, mufflers, etc, are flared to slip over the required pipe size, so they would be larger, but the pipe is measured in OD.
Thanks BearRiver. I'll probably take your advice regarding the 2" pipe. I don't want to create any restrictions, but can't afford to lose low end torque either.
Also, I've checked your company's site. Looks like you've got some quality product at a fair price. Do you offer a complete kit from the exhaust manifold back? I'm looking to replace the CAT and Muffler, and would like to end up with a nice rumble.
And does anyone have sound clips with Bear River products?
Our focus is mostly on the converter assemblies, we don't do much with the rest of the exhaust system. Since most of our business is with muffler shops, we don't see a lot of demand for complete exhaust systems. The shops generally just custom build what they need as needed.
