YF Accelerator pump question

Long story but I'm ditching my feedback carb for a pre smog unit.

When taking the accelerator pump apart, I found a check ball and a small washer laying in the bottom of the pump.

Sorry no pics at the moment but I'm guessing it fits into a ball seat in the housing and the washer gets pressed and pinned into the seat to hold the check ball in place?

I know it's hard to visualize without any pics, but was wondering if anyone knows what I'm talking about.

I took the old carb apart to compare, but the accelerator pump housing is different. The old one has a small plastic vent hose attached to it and does not have the check ball setup.

The diagram that came with the kit is pretty much useless.

Any thoughts?

There's only one check ball on the YF that I know of. I had a '78, '79, '81, and '82 YF in my garage and they're all pretty much identical, so I can't imagine one year would be too different.

All of the accelerator pumps I had had the small plastic hose attached to it.

The check ball went in a completely different location in the carb bowl. When you have the carb in half, there should be an opening that doesn't go anywhere (meaning the gasket closes it off). A check ball goes in there and then has a little weight on top of it.

As for the washer, the only washers I know of go on the linkage for the accelerator pump up near the springs and stuff that hold it in place.

Nope, I pulled the newer carb apart and the acc pump housing is different. That one has the little plastic line you are talking about.

The one I am rebuilding is from a mid 70's truck.

There is a small hole in the acc cover and when you take the 4 screws off, the ball and what looks to be a retainer for it goes on top of the new acc pump between the housing and pump.

There is a ball seat in that housing and it looks like that little washer is staked over in the housing to retain the ball. I put the ball back in the seat and pushed the washer back in place where it was once staked in place and it looks like it may hold.

When I took this one apart (someone was in there before), the check ball and washer was just flopping around on top of the new pump.

I guess I should have taken a picture. I'm going to put some fuel in it today and see if the acc pump works. If I can get the TFI dizzy swapped out too, I may try and fire it today and see what happens.

Interesting, I'd be curious to see pictures, just to see the difference.

Usually, when things fit perfectly like that, they were meant to go there.

That's the thing. The washer didn't really fit the well very good.

It seemed a bit too large and I had to muscle it in there. You could tell the ball needed to be there. The seat was shiney and the check ball fit perfectly. The washer itself looks like the universal symbol used in No Smoking signs for example.

It was a small metal washer with a line going through the center to keep the ball from falling through. It also had a shiney mark on it in the center where the ball had been rubbing against it.

Well, I must have done something right because after priming the carb through vent hole it fired right up.

Now I just have to swap out the TFI dizzy for a Duraspark-HEI hybrid setup. It wants to diesel on after shutting the key off. I suppose the computer is messing with the timing.......

Seems to run pretty good. I've got some blow by coming out of the PCV grommet on the valve cover, but I guess that is to be expected with a motor this old with unknown miles.

Next on the list is to swap out for some EFI manifolds. It sounds like I have an exhaust leak anyway so now is the time I suppose.

I followed this from the 1980-1986 truck forum. He's working on a carb from a 1971. Autolite D1TF-VA. Depending on calibration and year they can be extremely different, or just use different jets.

All of the Accelerator pump housings have a check ball inside them. Next time you have one apart, you can shake the accelerator pump and hear it rattle. It's purpose is so fuel won't be pumped back into the fuel bowl.

On the later ones that you and I are familiar with, "The one with the tube", the check ball is sealed inside the housing with a tamper proof type cap. It's not serviceable with the carb kits.

Right this is the second check ball and weight, and this one is serviceable.

On stosh's carb, there is a needle valve in place of the second check ball.

Awesome and interesting. Learn something new every day.

I just know on the ones I've seen, the check ball in the accelerator pump is completely enclosed and if you're seeing it, the pump is most likely no good!

Right.

The accelerator housing on stosh's carb seems to be designed different. The Check ball is exposed and held in with a washer that looks like the international symbol for "no".

I just checked all my diagrams from 1973-1986, and none of those have a accelerator housing like stosh's.

And I don't have the diagrams for 1972 and older.

I was doing some searching and came across this site:

http://www.carburetor.ca/carbs/tech/Carter/Y-index.html

I found a manual for the 1972 carb, but it still doesn't show the check ball in the pump housing but if you look very closely you can see the boss on top where the check ball is located on mine.

Just wanted to share the info.
