the question that i have never had answered about diesels...how can lugging harm the engine? btw, it is able to pull itself out of the basement in town too, so it dont lug(nor smoke) for very long...

Lugging an engine puts it under very high loads. The oil pump is driven by the engine, and if the engine is not turning very fast, that means not much oil pressure. High loads + low oil pressure is not good.
P.S. I see I still have to wade through the "chat room" to get to some posts where there is some useful knowledge exchange and questions.
man i think its great that yall think im some punk kid who is out to ruin it for yall funny how most trucks i see are blowin smoke are owned by older dudes with families.....i aint tryin to ruin anything for anyone or annoy anyone i just wanna have a little bit of fun... aint gonna do it all the time due to engine wear and fuel economy....... yall need to relax if i get a ticket or pulled over or whatever its my problem....sorry for even bringin it up... bad thread delete it!.....all im sayin is didnt yall screw around with your truck when yall were young and full off **** and vingar????
Yep, but I tweaked on my stuff to make them PERFORM actually go FAST, not just be obnoxious and have the appearance of being that way.
If I wanted my pickup to go faster, I installed a cam, intake, carb, headers, exhaust system and actually took the time to dial it in so it ran like it should. Not just flip the air cleaner lid over and cut the muffler off my stocker 2 bbl 350.
I happen to be one of those "older dudes with families". I also happen to own a newer Cummins along with my old IDI. I'm in the minority of Cummins owners and "young dudes" who would rather get a puff of black when I lay on the throttle than a heavy cloud of coal $$ going out the tailpipe.
Mine puts out a very slight black cloud when snap throtled and a smal trail when flored untill 5 psi. Technicly it is unconstitutional to make laws that require stricter enmitions than that at the time the vehicle was made due to the Grand fauther claus and if you got a good lawyer it is unconstitutional to ban older truck, presuit of happyness.
If you want more black smoke go into the 94.5-97 powerstroke forum and search walmart bag mod.
Oh and befor you go flaming some guy that did deserve it since he drives a duramax for posting links to powerstroke injectors, know what you are talking about some IDI have turbos they make kits to add them and some came from the factory with them in 93 and early 94.

Lugging you have to much fuel for the amount of air going into the cylinder , this causes black smoke, high egt's scored liners and melted pistons.
Lugging won't just harm the engine, it's also extremely hard on the transmission, they just aren't designed to handle the torque load at low rpms, auto or stick.
As for black smoke, my 6.9 made lots if I drove it so that it did, having the amount of fuel I have it set to and a non gated turbo just made it a low end smoker by nature, so, it meant staying light on the throttle until about 1800 or so.
My Cummins, I still want to get a smaller exhaust housing for it, but,I have it set up right now so that it makes a little bit of black before the turbo spools up, low boost fueling is actually set 5 turns below stock for smoke reduction. But, it also has a boost referenced injection pump(something that would be extremely nice on an IDI,) and it makes 33 psi up top... LOL
ypermax make a smoke puff limiter that regulates unboosted injection to limit smoke befor spool up. The only problem with a set up like that is it will lengthen the spool up time.
i wasnt raosting anyone i was simply defending myself ....and i i aint tryinto make my truck act like it has power....my inital question was how to make it due that and why? didnt say i was gonna fake it...i have built numerous trucks with performance upgrades....i dnt see why yall gotta get your feathers ruffled when asked a question or when someone defends them selves....its all ok though yall say what you must and put down california and "young punk kids" i really dont care...just seems like a great way to get ppl to join here and ask questions they need answered and have yall ju,p all over them is real nice......

oh and i wasnt talkin smack to him we were playin i was messing with him.... yall need to quit tellin me to calm down and take your own advice all i did was ask a question
FP, sorry for coming down hard on you, but when people come on who use tons of internet lingo and bad grammar and ask ignorant sounding questions of "I don't care about power I just think the black smoke looks cool" we generally get slightly frustrated at repeated questions that make the diesel crowd look bad in the eyes of the general world.
Try convincing my mother who hates diesels because min smokes when cold and one of her friends husbands Cummins can black out the sky before the turbos spool (its been dynoed at 600 hp tho) that diesels produce less emissions than gas vehicles, thus more restricting laws on diesels due to general assumptions of the public
well i will appoligize for comin off as ignorant and not wording myself right and no need to appologize for comin down hard on me im just sayin when someon asks a question answer dont brow beat em... i could of swore thats what this sight for?...anyway yes i know the laws and the impact that diesels have on ppls thougts of pollution and the environment...so im osry for comin off that way, but yes ima young redneck full of **** and vinigar and i can come off bwrong, but i just wanted to know why they smaok and how and i still stand by the fact that it is sexy when they black out the sky..( dnt lie it is cool)
Very well said Dean.
Filthy pride that post came from one of them country hicks rebel outlaw dudes your age maybe younger that has a pretty good grasp on things.Sorry about calling you dude Dean.
If you get mad about cali jokes your going to be mad alot. The plain fact is everybody else gets very tired of cali passing laws because they leak out to the rest of us eventually. But cali jokes are still cali jokes thats all.
This forum is the best idi forum anywhere, if you or anybody has a problem there many on here that will go out of their way to help you save your money and fix it yourself help you anyway they can. But they are not to quick to tell you how to do something stupid that hurts us all in the long run.
So if you have a problem or want more performance ask anything we'll help or at least try. we especially try to help young guys as they typically dont have the resources to pay big shop bills, but if all you want is smoke set it on fire.
oh my god ....seriously i just apologized for comion off all wrong and here you go again tryin to be all above me in yourpost. i asked a question and got no answer other than what a dumba** and so i was all i want4d to know was how and why they smoke and yeah aorry but its cool and seein as to how i aint t he only young redneck dude that drives a diesel and likes the smoke lay off i didnt say i wa gonna purposly ruin it for everyone else...if the smoke is just a by product of more power from turbos and programmers and such then so be it i will have to add performance mods i thought perhaps that it was from the stock muffler or from something that was restricting it sorry!
We were typeing at the same time nothing about getting all above you or whatever never seen your post until I was finished typeing with my one finger.
I'm pretty sure you got the info you ask for on your other thread.
Several good answers on how/why a diesel engine will smoke have been given in both the threads you have started.
Bottom line: More fuel or less air... will make more smoke
Nobody is attacking you, but you're not seeing the big picture. Whether you purposely mean to or not, it looks bad for all of us diesel owners for a truck to be rolling coal. And it is just more ammunition to be used against us to force excessive emissions onto newer trucks and force our older stuff off the road for good.
Except for racing/ pulling competition trucks that are overfueling to beat hell, I DON"T like seeing excessive smoke. A little bit of black is fine, but blacking out the sun is just a waste of fuel. And I am a beer drinking, engine hanging from a tree, dog on a chain, cars buried under 4 ft tall grass in my back yard, desperately clinging to guns and religion Redneck American. Just in case you're wondering
Dean and Starmilt have made some valid points. No need to be on the defensive. We are all friends here and our purpose is to keep our trucks running and help the next guy out when we can.
